Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

"Pixar used Disney’s D23 Expo to reveal a new toon pic. Elio is about an 11-year-old boy who finds himself transported across the galaxy and is mistaken for the intergalactic Ambassador for our Planet Earth.

Yonas Kibreab (Obi-Won Kenobi) stars as Elio, with America Ferrera as his mom, Olga Solis. The pic is directed by Annie Award-winning Coco co-helmer and screenwriter Adrian Molina and produced by Mary Alice Drumm (Coco)."

This isn't what we got.

Don't get me started on Andy in Toy Story.
Yes. I was referring to the movies the previous poster mentioned (Toy Story, Monsters, and Nemo). Humans were not the primary characters in those movies. Whatever design similarities those humans had is easier to overlook/ignore when you only intermittently encounter them. That is different than products like Red, Luca, and Win or Lose that have similar (unappealing IMO) human designs and those characters are the primary focus.

It doesn’t look good. And that blurb about “make an alien friend and become the ambassador from Earth” sounds suspiciously like the plot to the ET Adventure. Just replace the Speak-n-Spell device with a ham radio.

Hope you have your special interplanetary passports.

Do you think these characters would look mismatched if interacting in the same shot? What if they were interacting with the characters from Spiderverse, which DOES have a very different style? How about Charlie Brown or Dog Man?

It's not a bad movie, just "ok" for PIXAR, marketed horribly, and sandwiched between HHTYD, Stitch, Jurassic, F4, and Superman. I personally think moving it again to September/October would have been a better move since kid content will be light aside from Bad Guys 2, and gives it time to breathe until Zootopia 2
I think Disney's confidence was low that is why they buried it.

I had been hearing a theory out on the interwebs that the reason why Elio was moved to June 20th was to try to pull some focus away from Dragon. So it was sacrifice. And while it didn't have a huge effect, at least yet, it did have some.

It'll be interesting to see if it has a larger impact as time goes in the weeks to come.

Up was the pinnacle of Pixar IMO. Since then it’s been very uneven in its output.

With Up it hit all the right notes. Of course YMMV.
I adore this film. I recently bought the LEGO set.

My wife pointed out to me, “Huh - you really like a movie about a recently widowed old man who gets to go off and have fun adventures after his wife dies.”
Still a ways to go to match Elementals half a billion worldwide
”Too early to tell!”
