Question of the Day

Influenced by Jokers post and also having just passed the anniversary of the loss of a personal hero of mine in Anthony Bourdain, I’ve got my question for today:

Who is a hero of yours?

I've had a lot of answers to this question over the years, some of which haven't aged well (hi, 2000s era Dave Chappelle...) So I hesitate to use the "Hero" word. A person I'm definitely currently looking up to as a bit of a local mentor figure in the Sonoma County stand up scene is Goth comedian Oliver Graves.

I feel like I'm one of the few people in the local stand up circuit who's totally ready and willing to match Oliver's level of weird. His act has always been an influence on me since I started my stand up journey six months ago. What he does for Goth culture in comedy, I hope to do for the Autism community. I love how he's completely and totally unafraid to be himself on stage, and I'm really trying to follow in his footsteps with my own stage presence. I feel like at this point the two of us are more peers than mentor/apprentice, but it's still super cool to have someone with as much media experience as him in my local scene and being able to see eye to eye with him in a way most of the neurotypical stand ups in that same scene just can't. Weird recognizes weird, haha.

I will take the rare opportunity to establish myself as a Frasier superfan by saying Martin Crane

I'd have to agree with you on this one!

Also, I'm sure that somewhere online Paramount once planned a Frasier-themed Cafe Nervosa for a planned dining/shopping district by California's Great America when they owned that. Can anyone verify this? I haven't been able to find it anywhere, but I really thought I read it somewhere fifteen years ago or so!

I think I found what you were talking about! Bizarrely the only mention of Frasier and Great America together I could find is it being a potential theme for an ill fated Hyper at the park and not the logical approach of having a real Cafe Nervosa, regardless there is a connection

Yes, this is definitely one of the things I found! Thank you for searching for it!

I still think there was some plan for a "Downtown Disney"-like area that I read about, but maybe I was thinking about the coaster and my memory played a trick on me to have it make more sense!

Question of the Day

With fewer than 10 days left until our game begins, I’m working hard at finalizing all of the plans, prompts, and write-ups. To celebrate us nearing the start time:

What types of projects are your favorites to write?

We are also still looking for two players to join!

I like any project where I can get wackier with things, not necessarily full joke projects (though I love those), but just projects that are generally outside the usual tone and ideas of real theme parks

What exactly WOULD a Frasier roller coaster be like? I kind of wish they'd actually done this...

Me too, it’s just such a surreal premise that it’s kinda amazing

A Frasier themed coaster might be one of the most oddball ideas I've heard of, but as you said, it would be amazing to see what that would've become. Short lived, I'm sure.

Have to imagine a Space Needle replica somewhere along the track for "theming".

Rides with gags, and lots of ‘em! My favorite two pieces I wrote last summer were the Country Bears and Earlie the Pearlie dark rides, for that exact reason!

Since I’ve been seeing them all over TikTok and rarely are they actually “hot,”

What is your theme park hot take

Not something like “Cosmic Rewind is the best coaster” or “Universal is better than Disney” I’m talking things that even just sharing here will get you ostracized from our little community.

I’ll give a few

- Animal Kingdom tops the other three Disney World parks by a wide margin (most obvious of my takes)

- As cool as the other parks seem I’m not ever going to travel internationally specifically to visit a theme park. If I ever find myself in Japan (unlikely, there’s not a lot there that interests me) I’ll check out Disneyland and DisneySea but I’ll never book a trip out there just to visit a park. Even California has more to see for me than Disneyland. Florida is pretty much the only place I’ll go just for the parks and that’s on nostalgia mainly.

- Disney is building too many e-tickets and coasters and should be focusing on smaller scale attractions.

- Moana Journey of Water is the best thing Disney has built at Disney World since Expedition Everest.

- Tiana’s Bayou Journey isn’t that bad and Splash Mountain needed to go. Not just because of the racist history but because the ride was decrepit

- Figment is becoming just as overrated a character as Stitch. I don’t dislike either but Disney is relying way too much on both for merch and advertising. Meanwhile characters like Sonny Eclipse barely get any merch when he’s just as fun and unique.

- Space Mountain could just go away forever and I’d be pretty fine with it

CORRECT!!!

Also, yeah, don’t travel just to see theme parks…unless you’re doing a multi-state roller coaster road trip, that is a vacation fit for a king. (As Elton John once sang, there’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done.) If your travels just so happen to carry you to locations with theme parks, as they have for Hulk when Hulk abroad, then by all means visit those theme parks. That’s most likely why Hulk made it to the other five resorts before WDW, and why Hulk almost made it to Abu Dhabi already many years ago (had an either/or choice, and Hulk chose Singapore/Malaysia over UAE, no regrets).
