MK Cars-Themed Attractions at Magic Kingdom

So, the last time I checked this thread was August 17, 2024. I was literally disgusted when Disney announced the closure of TSI/ROA/Liberty Belle and honestly believe it is the worse thing they have ever done in "changing" the parks. Absolutely destroying that area. But with the new concept art, I figured I'd wade back in and revisit what they are doing.

So, I still feel this is an absolutely terrible indefensibly decision. Putting Cars in MK makes no sense. Destroying the ROA to put Cars makes less sense. If they wanted to "change" Frontierland to include some national parks concept that's actually okay, but adding Cars to that wrecks any harmony. They are destroying the entire point of Frontierland and having a lame concept to "try" to make it work.

That being said, even though these entire plans are horrible, I will say that the new information and concept art at least makes it seem like the execution of this ridiculous idea is probably about as good as possible. I'm very happy to see that it seems that the waterfront will persist - that was my first and main complain with the previous artwork that seemed to remove the water along areas which were designed to be waterfront. I even had said that they should keep the water intact from the Liberty Belle to BTMRR as that is the critical area that needs the water feature and it looks like this is doing exactly that. Whether than is from feedback or just someone coming to their senses it certainly seems like a (good) change from the original terrible concept art.

The features for the new land (subland?) seem actually nice if it plays out. The geyser, waterfalls, etc. If it weren't an incongruent Cars theme, having a national parks vibe would actually be a cool addition to MK. I like that it seems like the barrel bridge will remain in some form. someone else mentioned that maybe they can still have caves to explore and I hope they do (though not optimistic).

I'm glad to hear that the train will continue to run in some form instead of an extended closure again. I hope they "plus" the area next to Villains so that it makes it more interesting from the train - whether they just do dinosaurs or grand canyon like in DL or have the ride view into a Villains show scene (like in Splash) or having some new diorama concept. I'm guessing the Native American village does not return.

I hope they keep the Liberty Belle even if docked. Yes, that's not nearly as good as it staying as real transportation mode, but better than nothing. I wonder if there is any possibility of running that as a back and forth shuttle long term in the remaining water? Probably not, but would be cool. Any chance they keep the rafts going back and forth to a point on the Cars area? Again, almost certainly nice but would be cool to still retain some "traffic" on the water.

Not clear to me how this will exactly connect HM and its queue. Will it need to be modified significantly so that the queue works differently? Or does it stay as is and the path to Cars (and onto BTMRR) starts after the Liberty Belle dock and before the HM entrance?

I think all the negative feedback about losing the water definitely played a big part. Meaning those of us here who wouldn’t shut up and people like us complaining on social media actually made an impact. Unfortunately not enough to get the project cancelled but for it to be altered in a positive way. I think that water on the Frontierland side will kind of work like a little wider (I hope) Grizzly River Run with some trees in between the path/guests. Not the ROA but better than nothing.

Orrrr this was a contingency plan the whole time. “If they complain a lot we’ll go with the more expensive Plan B.” Doubt it though.

Thanks !

I like this better than the blurry first one. I like we still have riverfront in frontier land.

Maybe, just maybe, this will be OK.

We are ,many, many years away from this, and we have no idea what "scope cuts" will happen before it opens.
I have zero expectation that Liberty Belle will remain in any little water that is left unless permanently moored. I hope its saved and relocated somewhere on property.

I have visited RMNP and it is breathtaking. Not once did I ever think "hmmm, this gorgeous, quiet place filled with nature would be so much BETTER if it was filled with RACING CARS!!!"

Still catching up, but...

Pike's Peak, which isn't in RMNP, has historically hosted a race one day a year since 1916. The Unser family were big into it, back in the day. Mario Andretti won it once. So surprising as it may seem, the Rockies and racing cars do go together.

Still a stupid project though.

My main question is, what here replaces the all-ages attraction that the riverboat was? My parents are 70+ now, they're not getting on Cars High Speed Off-Road Rally, but you bet they would never ever have skipped a ride on the riverboat. Without a replacement for that, it's still a huge loss for WDW as a family fun park. There are fewer and fewer new attractions like that being built and whittling away the ones that do exist sucks.

For me, losing the riverboat is the hardest part of it all. TSI is one thing, and it looks like elements of it are being put into this new area, but the boat is an unusual attraction that anyone could enjoy. It's really too bad they don't look at a way to put it someplace else. Had they said something along the lines of reusing the boat somewhere, it'd be easier for me to love this thing.

It's like MMRR for me, if you look at it separate from what it's replacing, it's a great concept. Kids especially are going to have lots of fun when this opens.

"The North Woods"??

I had to look that up.

That's way more North in the U.S. then I would peg the Country Bears, especially with their drawl. I get an Appalachian vibe from them.
Surely the whole Country Music, accents, outdoors themes are Tennessee / Kentucky-ish.

Then again, there are buffalo and mooseheads on the wall, not many of those in the Appalachians... I guess I never picked up on that hint.

For the Liberty Belle... part of the problem with those attractions is the immense amount of upkeep the big wood thing takes.

They should salvage the the steam engine and make it into some set piece in BTMRR or the new area as a old-timers thing converted into some newer use..

To what extent? Do you think they will extend it to encircle Villains too? They can't really shorten like they did in Disneyland because BTM is in the way.
Yes, an extension. Easier than having guests walk over or under the track. Perhaps a show building extends beyond the train but I doubt the land itself.

I can’t imagine anything else necessitating a 4-year closure of two legs. If they are committing to shuttling the train, they want it open and would have the whole route open if they could. So, it stands to reason they can’t.

Sadly unless Disney finds someone that will pay Disney to take it away, I think the Liberty Bell will be dragged back stage to rot in the Florida sun.

I presume Bioreconsruct will give us overhead views of this some day :(

Caught up. This presentation does seem like a lot of damage control. Still lipstick on a pig though. Seems like a lot of space for what doesn't seem like any capacity improvements, and maybe an atmospheric wash (I still have my doubts about noise). Outside of more pathways. But Disney will be able to slap on a LL fee on space that used to be a decompression zone, so they'll be happy.

Disney said a “family fun” attraction is still planned for the new area - but more details will be revealed later.

Here's where I put down the pixie dust: This doesn't sound like a mini-ride for kids, but a play area. If that's the case, that's disappointing.

Wait so is Liberty Square being absorbed into Frontierland? Why mention that area at all if it’s its own land on the map?
No, that's not what I got from this. There were people on here saying that Liberty Square was going away, but after this announcement, I don't see that happening. I think they highlighted it to help explain the multi-regional approach of this side of Magic Kingdom. It's a dumb argument for doing what they're doing, but that's why they're talking about Liberty Square.
