Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I heard a review for Thunderbolts on NPR this afternoon. I had no idea that Julia Louis Dreyfus was in it!?

She's a favorite of mine for decades, and Veep is some of the funniest stuff on TV in the past 20 years. 🤣

That was about the highlight of the NPR review for Thunderbolts. They did that typical NPR thing where they sort of faintly praised it in coded language while subtly alluding to the fact that Marvel really needs a big hit after the past few years of box office troubles. So for those who speak NPR, it seemed to get about a B+ rating.

Thunderbolts opens this weekend with a huge theater count; 4,330! Snow White and The Amateur give up about 1,200 theaters at the same time.

This is the comparison fallacy…

Comparing sinners to Disney is not valid.

Sinners is not a tent pole…which 90% of Disney movies are made to be.

It’s funny how one day all “cinema” is unique and it’s about the art

…and when that doesn’t wash…every move is on equal footing…

The posts are on roller skates with grease

Did you see the movie? I think you're overplaying the "eye candy" here, while both are attractive off-screen they aren't specifically played up as such in the movie as its set in the 1930s.
It’s a horror movie…so definitely not my jam in the theaters.

But I wasn’t talking about the movie appearances

I’ve heard Jordan and the phrase “hall pass” mentioned together like a 100 times…all over the place. Like a few times in sports media…
Try not to think about it too much.

And steinfeld has matured quite nicely since the early days…

Just saying…pretty people draw…whether it’s conscious or subconscious

If that’s the takeaway…I’d say it’s fair

MCU hasn’t had a film really exceed expectations since like G3? Not quite sure even that one did

Lol, by that measure almost every Hollywood movie has the "pretty person eye candy" draw.

Seeing some good word of mouth from some of the common people on some Discords I'm on re: Thunderbolts*

"Wow, Thunderbolts* was actually great. Watching it genuinely made me care about the MCU again. Quality-wise, it felt in line with a lot of the good phase 3 movies."

"Thunderbolts* was very very good! Probably top 3 post Endgame Marvel movies. Genuinely got moved in one scene. Definitely recommend"

"Just got out of Thunderbolts* - excellent movie, very fun, tackles several big topics without cramming it down your throat."

Good to hear! I always have hope movies do well, at least break even.

The top 3 are all Disney.
Hey post that 6 more times so 3 of you can like it 👍🏻

Was that point being argued?
Nope…not once

So let me recap:

This entire watchdog party is their trajectory…which is self inflicted

2024 was a good year for them
2023 they BOMBED like 9 out of 11 movies

0 for 2 so far this year
Thunderbolts is reviewing well…but the tracking isn’t great so far. We’ll see

Now can we stay focused? Maybe skip the “it’s cinema and for art and all movies make tons of money on D+” please?…maybe just for a day?

Rust has finally been released. Been looking forward to this for the setting primarily - 1880s Wyoming, yes please.

Not showing where I live so Amazon Prime it is.
