Moana 2 (Disney Animation - November 2024)

Sorry to quote an old post, but I just learned that Moana was the most streamed film last year not just on Disney+ but across all platforms, which sort of blows my mind and easily explains the sequel’s box-office success.

it’s a film with extremely broad reach. Boys love it, girls love it, little ones love it, parents enjoy it. The music is great, it tugs just enough at the heart strings, it is a classic Disney film through and through.

That Wish is so derivative creatively and paint-by-numbers in execution kind of makes it more insulting as a result. That and its underdeveloped story and morals also make no sense when you stop and think about them.

While there are certainly other Disney movies that are more difficult to sit through, Wish is in its own way more infuriating.

Yeah, it's that ugly combination of a half-baked story, message, and characters, poor execution of such (i.e. the songs), and that this was the centennial project, "A Story 100 Years in the Making" that was explicitly advertised as in the great tradition of films like Beauty and the Beast , and that (as far as we know) didn't undergo the miserablly meddled-with production that films like The Emperor's New Groove, Frozen II, etc. did that made people so unhappy with Wish, and why I don't think it would have done any better this year than it did last (imagine Wish going up against Wicked Part One!).

But bringing this back to Moana 2, as successful as it's been financially it's clear the critical response is getting to some people, as seen in this puff piece interview:

Moana 2 already made a profit in it's first week. The rest is gravy. It doesn't need to be #1 for months to come.

Moana 2's Cinemascore already shows that the audience liked it, but not necessarily loved it like for Wicked.

Let's just celebrate there's room for two successful musical movies at a time.

Sorry, I must have missed it among all the din! I certainly remembered it was leading the pack on Disney+ but didnt realise (or had forgotten) that it was Number 1 overall.

It’s the one area D+ tends to trounce Netflix in. It’s also a little silly that there is currently so much hand wringing that Disney is no longer creating franchises, when they’ve already struck gold again twice this decade (Elemental only was available for a few months).

Luca also managed to feature two years in a row and is a bit underestimated, as is turning red.

Luca, Encanto, Elemental and Turning Red are my faves.

Turning Red I cannot in good faith separate out the fact I am the same age as Domee and grew up near Toronto. So it’s like the weirdest movie I’ve ever experienced in terms of being made for me. Basically a mea culpa that I’m incredibly biased into liking that film; not just shilling for it.

These are the four 2020+ movies I see current parks representation for and having an ongoing life. Even if one or two not named Encanto turn a bit more into a Tarzan or Hercules like franchise.
