Folks like to bring up Uni, and yes, they are much too overly reliant on thrill rides. But Uni was built with the idea that they would emphasize thrills and pick up the guests Disney missed. Now that they are competing directly with Disney they need to pivot off that philosophy and they’ve been slow to do so. Disney, however, has pivoted… to Universal’s ride philosophy. This is despite the fact that they became industry leader with a philosophy of accessibility.

That and trying to lead instead of copy their competitors. Or at least when they'd rip off something like Busch Gardens or Wet 'N Wild they'd build something better like Animal Kingdom or Typhoon Lagoon.

Uni is at its best when it tries to outdo Disney and the reverse is to Disney's detriment because we know they can do better.

Monsters isn’t a musical. It’s also an IP without adult human characters. Instead, the cast is full of creatures with inhuman body dimensions. Unless you’re just going to use the existing Mike and Sully outfits, which would be awful, you’re probably going to be relying on screens. That would mean something like Muppets, a type of attraction Disney clearly sees as dead and undesirable, or something like MILF, which doesn’t fit in that theater space at all.

Disney stuck that line in the release because, outside of the coaster, this is a fairly cheap overlay and they don’t want to remove or significantly alter the theater structure but having an empty venue of that size (especially after killing Muppets) looks bad.

The only reason I’d expect some form of stage show is because they haven’t said anything amongst a bunch of announcements. That makes me think they don’t really know, but they’re handing it over to Entertainment to fill with something. I guess it could all suffer the same fate as at Disney’s California Adventure and become the preview theater.

Please define “dead IP” for me.
Looney Tunes is getting a theatrical movie next year and had one in 2021.
Muppets just got a show in 2023.
Both still sell merch and have dedicated fan bases. I fail to see how either of these are “dead” when compared to something like Rocky & Bullwinkle.

We don’t have to argue semantics. It’s not thriving or growing. This IP continues to decline in popularity from one generation to another.

What you are describing are unsuccessful attempts to revitalize these IP’s at least till now.

Courtesy of CosmicRewind on Bluesky- there's lots of potential expansion land they could use. Personally, I don't see them doing anything of this scale, but you theoretically could build the Gonzo Pizza Place to the left of RnR, only needing to replace that parking lot.

I'd love that. I imagine the space marked for the Great Muppet Movie Ride is being thought of for other properties though. The coaster, MuppetVision & a restaurant would be good enough for me.

Folks keep saying the Muppets announcement was a “compromise.” In fact, Disney has just announced the most aggressive and extreme plans for major attraction removals in its history - Bugs, Dinosaurs, Rivers, Muppets, etc. Major destruction in 3 out of 4 parks. A “compromise” would have been ONE new build expansion, one of three that wasn’t just a rip-out and replace.

This comment in a vacuum is genius. It’s also lacking context and completely self serving to prove your ridiculous point.

I feel like if they weren't putting a show in the theater, they could have just built the door coaster and rethemed Mama Melrose whilst keeping the front half of Muppet Courtyard for Muppets with Muppet Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo. Muppet Vision is getting evicted for a reason.

When it comes to what the show could do, I keep thinking about "Put that thing back where it came from or so help me" in the credits to the movie, or the Better Together show from Paris that features a Monsters Inc musical number

Muppets is getting evicted because Disney doesn’t want to pay to run it (and because every ride needs a land, but mostly the money thing).

Monsters Inc does have one musical number. One. Perhaps they’ll pay to write all new songs for a puppet intensive show, but I’m skeptical - especially since they just chopped up Nemo.

I also don’t think they’ll do a major show based on an intentionally terrible musical that appeared as a credits gag.

Velocicoaster had a boost to attendance as well as Hagrids.

Velocicoaster has had no effect on Islands of Adventures. Attendance has fallen.

Rogers: The Musical recently played at DCA, so I wouldn't put it past them to do something similar again.

That's more to do with Epic Universe. Many are waiting for it to open before visiting Universal. I do know that when Velocicoaster opened Islands had an attendance boost.

After the initial emotions have worn off, while its still bad, it’s not so bad.

Firstly we all must remember Disney only does stuff in their best interests, NOT the guests interests, so the reason they did not put the Monster ride in the launch bay was for them so save the office space.

So the monsters is going where it’s going but the good news we will have a theater show too. This makes monsters a NET ADD of attractions. At first I thought they were destroying Muppets to add Monsters, a net result of no additional attractions.

So we GAINED an attraction and that is good!

They needed to re theme RnR anyway so Muppets there is fine, if it’s the same coaster track it will still be a fun coaster.

I really don’t think they will relocate Muppets 3D anywhere, they will probably dump it onto Disney+, but if they do relocate it, that will be another net gain of attractions.

Now, IF the new theater show turns out to be the laugh floor relocated from MK, THATS BAD, as that is ANOTHER closed attraction at MK.

Let’s see what happens.

Whatever show ends up here does need to live up to Muppet Vision, and Rogers the Musical shows they can make a whole new theater show with multiple songs, for a show that only lasted 3 months. This is also going to be the third new show they're developing for this park and probably the one they need to get right the most

I think they need to add some dark rides after this wave. Encanto will be great, but I think we can add some more.

Put a Stitch ride in Tomorrowland. Expand world showcase. Add an omnimover to Animation Courtyard. That needs to be the second half of this decade of investment

Somewhat interesting that Disney seemingly paid attention to the backlash they received around the D23 announcements when it seemed like Muppets would be on the chopping block, but instead of saving the show they decided what people wanted was for the Muppets to take over another ride in the park. One that does not at all fit the Muppets vibe (an inverted launch coaster muppets ride?) As usual a decision that makes nobody happy.

I actually think that fits the chaotic nature of the Muppets a lot, especially the Electric Mayhem who are some of the most chaotic Muppets.

The main issue is the height requirement which means this won't be a kid friendly Muppet attraction.

Studios desperately needs come small rides like spinners. Toy Story land would be perfect place to expand out and add those.
