How would you even be able to get a gun pass thru security ?

Very easily.

If somebody is firing indiscriminately into a crowd you'll be safer pressed to the ground where you won't get hit by a bullet flying through the air randomly. If there is something to get behind quickly that would be the better option. Yes, if the shooter is specifically aiming at you they can hit you easily if you are stationary on the ground. If, God forbid, there was ever a shooting in the middle of MK, it's more likely somebody is just going to open fire into a crowd and fire until security and the police (hopefully quickly) take them down.

The thing shooters who go after crowds do with some consistently is try to trap a bunch of people together in one place. They want people to be stopped where they are because it gives them multiple easy targets.

A person on the ground is an easy target and also going to get injured by people tromping on their head as they run past. Run hide fight, but again, look for open passageways. Don’t go anywhere that there’s a crowd crush and run away from crowds if possible.

Yep, that's what my employer's annual safety training says, too and that's based on the suggestion of law enforcement and safety experts. Run away from the shooting/sound if possible to do so safely (not entering a hallway/stairway that leads towards the incident), hide if running isn't an option, and fight if you have no other choice and are confronted by an attacker. A mass shooter rarely stands in one place when their goal is to hit as many people as possible. None of the people running knew the situation, so they ran away from the scene of the fight and the sound of the pop.

Also, people really need to stop by a gun range and hear what a gunshot sounds like. A balloon popping which I think most people have heard isn't really easy to confuse with a gunshot.

Outdoor and unmuffled gun shots sound quite a bit different than those filtered through two walls/panes of glass and/or hearing protection. Also, different calibers will have differing volume and timbre, sometimes affected by the firearm being used. Smaller calibers can, indeed, sound very much like a balloon popping.

This was the oldest post I found last night shortly before the “shooter” rumors began. It really does seem like a fight broke out and one of the involved parties got on the monorail which is why the monorail remained closed even after the “shooter” concerns that caused the whole park to go into lockdown mode.

He got it through security because the types of checks done at the parks and airports aren’t actually very effective at finding things.

Firearm noise is normal during nightly fireworks but at that time guests have their guard down enjoying the show.

Extremely grateful that there was no shooting- my heart skipped a beat when I saw the initial headlines. As a survivor of a mass shooting and having lost a close friend who was with me, there is nothing more horrible and life-changing than a normal day being turned into a nightmare in a split second.

It’s heartbreaking for everyone involved and something that sticks with you forever- no body should have to experience tragedies like this, so I’m relieved that this was just a rumor/instance of mass confusion.

As usual, there's an information vacuum so people will fill it with whatever comes into their heads.

We don't know all of the facts, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions about whether Disney handled this properly or not.

Our typical response to our guests is to tell them to do what we do, if it’s an actual emergency they’ll tell us (via the alarm, phone, or radio) and we’ll lead them to the nearest exit. Our primary job is to keep the guests calm and informed so a stampede doesn’t happen, that’s how people get trampled and killed over false alarms.

And that’s what I was pointing towards - why are CM’s directing guests into backstage areas when there was a fight at the monorail station?

That tells me the CM’s were panicking like the guests.

It’s totally understandable to panic - and of course better safe then sorry but I still wonder what all happened

My whole argument is people should stop to think rather than simply panic and blindly react, that’s the worst possible thing they can do in any situation.

I agree that panicking is never a good reaction, if a person can avoid it (sometimes it’s just a physiological response.) I do think responding quickly - even immediately - is different than panicking. If you hear a fire alarm, and you are visiting an establishment, exit immediately. If someone is screaming about active shooters, exit immediately. Don’t panic and run into a wall, or start ramming into people or throwing children out of the way in a blind panic - but move fast.

I think that speaks to buildings not up to fire code. They wouldn’t have lived if they had stayed put, they would have died in a fire.

There are false alarms, of course. I’m fine recommending “walk don’t run”, if people are uncertain about the situation. But walk in an orderly manner away from the reported shooter at least.

During the Las Vegas shooting into the crowd at the county music festival some did not run but instead stayed in place and threw their own bodies on top of their loved ones while the shooter from the hotel windows kept firing into the crowd . One of the ones killed was a CM from DLR. Iger later met with her family.
