Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It's not about The Supremes at all.

Probably without any good music, much less Motown, and certainly nothing you could dance to or make chocolate chip cookies to in the kitchen at 11pm on a second glass of Drambuie.

So... okay. It's Poor Things and All Of Us Strangers so far. Then more artsy stuff for niche audiences that won't break even. Yay?

Gravy? Once a film makes its profit at the box office, the people who invested in it start getting their money back.

They want to make a profit so they can keep making movies and get their deserved funds back. There are passion projects, but it is not gravy.

And Poor Things is making a profit… and will continue to make a profit… but that is alright as someone who complains about any Disney film being over budget, but thinks it is great when Gladiator 2 budget balloons over 315 million… I see your biases

Imagine investing a hundred dollars to someone and in two years you get that 100 dollars back plus a five dollar bill. Not really worth your time or something that brings to mind gravy on top of profits. Even arthouse pictures expect more than that in show business. Yes, Poor Things made a profit. I just think that everything is gravy is funny and makes it sound like there is some massive passive income going on.

Funny enough, you would then have to admit a lot more movies, including Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 as a lot of gravy. Smash hit in comparison.

I never said a movie should cost 315 million like it is an average however it is understandable why Gladiator 2 will likely end up costing that much(a lot of it was due to the strike delays too, look it up) than Haunted Mansion or Wish Costing near 200 million pre writers and actors strikes. Other movie studios are getting hits with budgets lower and as large as many of Disney's. So it is currently an issue unique to Disney right now outside of Avatar.


Hilarious that Poor Things is still being talked about in general. Forget Bias accusations, the reality is people are holding onto Poor Things as a gravy train, and that shows how desperate the brand loyalists want a win. Its cool that it was not a loss. I was not saying gravy in reference to the studio… it was in reference to the profits that Poor Things will make from here on out… I base each film on it’s own merits… I do admit the Studio had a bad 2023… I never said otherwise.., but you wanted to infer that Poor Things still had investors to pay which if it is in profit zone it has already paid investors

Only about $10M is being attributed to the strikes for Gladiator 2 budget. The ballooning from $165M to $305M (when taking away strike related costs) are due to the production itself, including some accidents during stunts and other on-set issues causing reshoots.

I never said you made excuses.

What excuses? It is reality. What Indiana Jones and Little Mermaid Covid related cost were equal to over half million per week of the plus 100 day strike? Haunted Mansion's budget was big too. And it was just not that well appreciated of a movie. Wish had to cost near 200 million and cost more due to covid? Not the same scale as Gladiator 2. It makes sense that Gladiator would cost more than those in the first place.

None of Disney's big budgets made much of a profit.

I am not asking anyone to stop speaking of Poor Things. It being the main conversation for what seems like ten pages now is an observation that there is a fixation on it waiting to make a dollar a the box office when the company lost over a billion last year and are scrambling for some projects for this year after saying they would slow down and not oversaturate. It is not that you wouldn't. It was an observation to keep discussing about its profit it reached when everything else from the company so woefully underperformed for the company. It does not fit the what now part of the thread.

So will Disney be willing to do more arthouse pictures now? Will that be a bit more of their focus?

Less tent poles should be their focus? So many have said that hundreds of pages ago in this thread. Long before Iger admitted to the mistake.

On the note of Universal, it is more shocking that Migration did so much better than Wish. Migration, was not that great of a film by any stretch so it is wild that it was the animated film that doubled the domestic income of Disney's original princess movie.

I am not just basing the posts on just theatrical box office… I noticed in the universal theme park threads anytime someone even mentions the smallest of critiques on Universal parks you are there quickly to defend and compare how much better they are over Disney… I am not going to derail this thread to much…but there was something you said there that clicked in comparison to Disney

Yep…I never argued about The Haunted Mansion…but you still want to point out that movie… as it is the easiest one to compare….I agree…it was truly awful… I think it would of been fine as a streaming movie, but in theaters….the one saving grace it was not the 2003 film

By the way I have read articles about Sony, Warner Brothers, and Paramont all having issues about possible bankruptcy… it seems WB pulled out of it, but Paramount may be in trouble and bought out… I am hoping not… as someone who goes to the theater every week… I think a healthy dose of completion is good… You know what Studio I have not read about any bankruptcy issues… Disney

That person is being ridiculous. As you say, why wouldn’t we be talking about Poor Things. To date, it has been nominated for 244 major awards and has won 84 of them. It is nominated for 11 Academy Awards and is expected to win a few of those. It is a spectacular movie, and it’s hysterical that all the ones hating on it have not even seen it.

But as I have every single LP and CD that Motown Records ever released for The Supremes, I wouldn't need to see the film or buy the soundtrack for this movie. I'll let it pass. But for about 8 minutes last night, I was so excited to see this movie!

They already have a movie loosely based on the Supremes. It’s called Dreamgirls. I trust you’ve seen that one? It’s not Disney, so you can watch it!

I have now-hazy memories of seeing it on Broadway in the late 80's, and then much clearer memories of seeing it at the Ahmanson Theater around 2000. But I never saw the actual movie because I'd seen the stage show already. Twice. It was pretty good, as I remember. Although it obviously was merely "inspired by" The Supremes, and not a faithful retelling of their specific story.

Nope. There's a separate thread for every motion picture Disney has released theatrically in the past year or two on this forum, including smaller studios like 20th Century releasing the various Poirot movies that bombed, etc.

But Searchlight movies like Poor Things and All Of Us Strangers never seem to get their own thread dedicated to them in this forum to talk about the film, the plot, the characters, the artistry, etc.
