The timing does sound bad.
If you think you might like her, you might think of just getting to know her a bit before school is over, (i.e. striking up a conversation when you run into her) then maybe you two could write each other over the summer and get to know each other a bit better without any pressure.

Well, it has happened a few times. Mostly in my youth; however in the past year I was successfull....twice.

I can't imagine how awful that must have been for you. My daughter was taken out of the delivery room for about 10 minutes before we got to see her, and I was a total basket case about it.
