Writers Block Junction

Hey, guys. I've been wanting to set up a thread like this, and I think that it could help a lot of people out.

We all get writer's block. Sometimes, when we're working on projects alone we end up getting hung up on certain details , leading to days (or weeks, or months, or years) of little to no progress because we can't figure out how to continue. I'd like for this thread to be a place where we can all come together and help each other through this writer's block. So, if you're working on a project and are looking for an outside perspective or opinion to help push your concept in the right direction post it here!

Or don't and let this thread fade into obscurity. Either is fine. This is really an experiment that I hope to see take off.

And I'm having trouble with an aspect of one of my projects, and I wanted to try to get opinions, so this is self-serving in a way.

So, I've finally resurrected Discovery Bay, for the three people who saw the initial concept 3-4 years ago.

I've taken a different approach and I'm writing attractions individually before actually writing out the land descriptions, and I am now at a crossroad for one of the attractions.

This is a rollercoaster themed around the golden age of aviation in the very early 1900s (technology is more advanced in the universe of the park because steampunk.). The attraction is meant to be a love letter to barnstorming, flying aces, and such. I'm stuck at the ride system. I have three, somewhat similar concepts that get increasingly larger because scale is not my strong suit(ignore the aesthetics. This is mainly to show off the technology.):
IMG_1953.JPG

Concept 1: Two seater monoplane. The track is similar to RMC's T-Rex, or an Intamin Hot Racer, but as a suspended coaster. The front passenger is given a control stick where they are able to spin the front part of the plane 360 degrees mostly-freely.

Concept 2: Three seater monoplane. Almost identical to Concept 1, but the T-Rex/ Hot Racer track is below the car, with it now raised about 4 feet to still allow for the 360 degree spinning. The actual track is meant to be hidden during parts of the ride, similarly to Universal's DK coaster concept.

Concept 3: Six seater bi-plane. This is basically an Arrow suspended. No interactivity, but the cars are able to swing freely. Might be a train of multiple cars? Probably the most "realistic" of the three concepts.

-----------------------------------------------

Personally, I'm partial to Concept 2 because the track/ supports could be concealed more easily, but any of them could work well. I'd love to hear if anyone has any thoughts, positive or negative, to help me get this solidified.

The business side of me says concept 3. Better throughput I would assume based on size alone and I think interactivity with attractions can almost go too far these days and not just let guests ride and enjoy the experience. Plus allows more of a group to share the experience together.

The immersive/creative side of me though says 2. Slightly expanded capacity from 1 and the beauty of flight is looking above and around you and being part of the sky. Losing that overhead rail really opens up line of sight if you give guests plenty of eye candy. Not sure where you end up going with this, but you could even choose 2 and mock up a suspended rail for show on the first lift and then "release" the plane to glide/fly depending on the plane style you choose and remainder with the track hidden below as you said.

Look forward to what you do!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm definitely leaning towards Concept 2, though I do definitely get your point on focusing too much on interactivity. I really adore the fake suspended rail. That's definitely something that I'll try to integrate. Aesthetically, I'm looking at something similar to the Antoinette, but it's still pretty up in the air. Thanks again! You've been super helpful.

Bump. I'm getting back into the Blue Sky resort and I'm struggling to think of an alt main street area. Basically- the crown jewel park is so large that I want two entrances- which means two transtion areas. I'm using an expanded main street for the first entrance. I have mickey avenue in another park. Any suggestions?

You could do literally anything. Where do you want this entrance placed in the park? You could always expand whatever land its closer to and theme the entrance area to that land, i.e. a medieval village, a western town, or a futuristic shopping district. Or do you want to get weird with it?

This entrance is in between Mythos ( which is a land dedicated to exploring myths/fairytales) and Toontown. It is opposite from Main St and will connect to the hub. My vision is for it to be a full fledged entrance, to serve the guests on that side of the resort. ( The park is in the center of this large resort area.) I have two other hotel linked entrances ( Both are served by skyliner as the hotels are set far enough away so that the expansion pads outside the berm can be used) that are incorporated into their respective land . There's also four hotels in the park itself.

I dealt with a similar conflict on an EPCOT space attraction i worked on. The ride system being over the user was "easier" to implement in a way but harder to hide esp when your dealing with the idea of "Flying" through space. You wanna see the expanse.

I would recommend going for Concept 2 because you allow the attraction to have the realism of space.. But for logistics and engineering designs I would remove the 360 degree spinning aspect. Instead I would allow the "aircraft" to sway 5 or 10 degrees on either side.. This would allow the aircraft to tilt more in turns, adding the degree of the tern and would allows provide the occasional "Turbulence". (Think the mine train and slinky dog)

If you want I could try to draw you a concept of what I mean later.

So what exactly is your concern. The conflict of design of comical Toonland linking up to the more serious Castle resort area.

If this is the scenario I would recommend making that the transition an unique one instead of walking directly between the too.. Like make it weird back story where Toontown is hidden off behind trees or a TV studio or something. Something that will give the guest something to be curious about while they transition between the two areas. I would also make the path curve or turn to prevent an perfect view of Toontown from the castle but would allow guest to see the castle from Toontown.

My idea for the second main entrance is for it to be a full "land" on to it's own, My current thinking is with the two adjoining lands being so different in tone is to created an original character that has a mythos about him- and use that in the transition area eventually dumping out into a studio type land that doubles as an entrance area and has a more seamless link to Toontown.

Yo great to see you popping back in.

I definitely agree with your suggestion. As much as I'd like to give guests that full control it just isn't practical. Really appreciate the tip. I'll probably end up going in that direction.

Famous last words: but I'm going to try to pop in more often. Maybe I'll create something.

Full Control is hard when your dealing with an attraction like that. It would be EPIC but practically/cost would go for the more "Simplified version" Maybe still give a flight stick and give the "illusion" of control
