Should Sesame Street’s Bert & Ernie get married?

Should one of TV’s longest-running couples take the plunge?

A Facebook campaign calling on PBS to marry off longtime pals Bert and Ernie on “Sesame Street” has picked up approximately 4,000 signatures and an disproportionate amount of headlines.

It’s time, activists argue, with New York now legalizing same-______ marriage, to show kids that gay couples are everywhere and just like everyone else.

The nature of Bert and Ernie’s relationship has dogged the show for years. The makers of Sesame Street have issued a statement hoping to quell the controversy, saying, the roomies were “created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.”
Further, PBS says Muppets don’t have sexual orientations.

Really? As writer Armistead Maupin noted, referring to Kermit the Frog and a certain Miss Piggy, “The folks who fret that a wedding between Bert and Ernie would ’sexualize’ a kids’ show were remarkably silent about a frog porking a pig.”

This blog report was brought to by the letter “Y” are we talking about this silliness?

I am going to go with no. As near as I can tell Bert and Ernie were intended to be the Muppet version of the odd couple and not boyfriend and boyfriend. Since Jim Henson is dead I think the only person who could really make this call is their co-creator, Frank Oz. If he says yes, then I say go for it as there is a good lesson in it.

Oh brother. I can't believe they would even consider this.

Actually I think it would be a better lesson to say that two guys can live together and not be judged as gay. Teaches kids to be less judgemnetal.

Edit - the following statement is incorrect: Jim Henson and Frank Oz were not involved with Sesame Street.

Actually they were. Quite extensively in fact in Henson's case. They did not create Sesame St but Jim Henson became involved with it in 1969. He is actually credited with saving the show as its original format was very Muppet light to begin with. Both Oz and Henson played the characters on the show at one point.

 Please explain.

Well, upon review, my statement was a bit misleading. Henson was involved with creating the physical Muppets used in Sesame Street. Later on he was involved with a bit of the story and production. Sesame Street and the story around it were not his idea though.

It was created by a team of educators as a way to teach kids. According to Wikipedia the two main creators are Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett.

Correct. They were called in after the fact.

All right, I %$##@#$% up. I admit it. Henson and Oz created Bert and Ernie and their relationship. Learn something new every day! I didn't realize Bert and Ernie weren't part of the original Sesame Street.

Naw. Not my style. Everyone can't know everything. I would much rather politely correct than belittle or poke fun. Like you said you learned something new today and that is always a good thing.

Bert and Ernie are non-sexual beings....just like Bugs Bunny dressing in drag does not make him a drag queen.

And Porky Pig and Donald Duck not wearing pants does not make them exhibitionists.

I like this sentiment. I wouldn't be opposed to them introducing gay characters, but to change Bert and Ernie's relationship now would be wrong.

I am going to resist the cheap "Well they do both have a man's hand in them" joke that I have already made on Twitter. To make them marry is like rewriting the Odd Couple into a romantic comedy (I called dibs on the idea so don't even think about Hollywood). There are better ways to teach kids tolerance than marrying off 2 of your most famous puppet characters. People are just over-thinking the whole context of the bath thing.

While they are non-sexual beings apparently the WDWMagic site is because this was the ad I saw below your post:

Is this an ad for what I think it is?

Is this an ad for what I think it is?

I'm pretty sure the ads rotate...so what you see is not what others may see.

I don't think you can hotlink to an ad either.
