Would Do You Think?

I am n the early stages of planning my 50th Birthday in 2017 and being a somewhat Disney fan, I have considered go to WDW for it. But with the state of the parks, the UNATTENTION to detail I am really CONSIDERING going to Dollywood/Pigeon Forge for my 50th Birthday! I had a vacation planned in 2013 that was planned for 14 years, I read all the warning signs of how bad things were in the parks, but being a AVID Disney fan at the time, I ignored them...thinking it could not be that bad! Boy was I wrong! After 14 years of planning and saving for this trip, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in my beloved WDW.
Now that my 50th birthday celebration in 3 years away, planning has begun...I am beginning to hear the same horror stories! Most recently 7DMT animatronics not working, and damage in the queue areas ALREADY!
Dollywood is looking better and better as the time to decide on a 50th Birthday Vacation location is fast approaching! What do you think?

First off, do not believe everything that you read on these threads. Things like AA's not working, is something that is observed in the stopped time frame of the beholder. It doesn't mean that 10 minutes later it wasn't working. All the extremes are what you hear about. There is no real ongoing observation. Any mechanical thing can malfunction, new or old.

Second, because of what I just said, all reports of problems are individual opinions and might not mean anything to you when you actually are there. Never take the word of any of us, including me. If you think WDW is a place you would like to go to... go and make up your own mind. At the very least, the good still way outweighs the bad.

Dollywood is a nice place, no doubt about it, but in reality, there is no comparison. It is kept nice but it is nothing compared to the quality of WDW. I have been to both. Not only did I get bored but my age showed up really quickly climbing the mountain it is built on. If you love coasters, it has some good ones, dark rides are OK, but no where near the quality of WDW and some of the external rides are amazingly like Disney's only older looking and named differently. But it is hard to not recognize spinning tea cups and flying elephants. Oh, yea... you have to live, eat and sleep country music. If you love it... it's like heaven.

^^^ This. Exactly.

If I had listened to most of the critical comments that I read on there, I would have been upset that I had booked my trip for last week; instead, I chose to take what I read here with a grain of salt, used a lot of the tips that I read to my advantage, and had a blast! Seriously. If my trip had been any more perfect, I would have thought I was dreaming the whole time.

Besides, if you're going to stay away from WDW because the queue at 7DMT has seen a little damage thanks to rude guests, you may as well not go anywhere ever. Dollywood sees just as many rude guests as WDW does (after all, they see plenty of school groups and families that don't pay close enough attention to their children), so I'd be very surprised if this kind of stuff doesn't happen there as well.

I love Dollywood as well, though, so for me the choice would be tough. My point here is that you shouldn't make your decision based solely on the negatives you read here. Many of the people on these boards are in the parks several times a week, and so they have a different view of things than those of us who don't get to go but every several years.

Best of luck making your decision!

Been to Dollywood last summer. Good for you if you think this economy has only hit the big parks like Disney. Ah, no, Miss Dolly is NOT doing well. Guessing she hasn't been updated since maybe, 1990. Go for it, if you want to, but my opinion is, you will get more value, even if they are having issues, than Miss Dollywood! LOL

If you have doubts, go where your heart desires; personally, no doubts whatsoever; I'll be at Disney.

p.s. Have you considered a cruise (Disney) for your fiftieth. (just a rhetorical suggestion)

Anyone can be critical of things that stick out to them. For example, saying "unattention" when someone really means "inattention" could get others so annoyed, nothing else the person says would have any credibility.

I've never been to Dollywood, but I can't imagine it being better maintained than Disney. Make a choice that suits you and enjoy your 50th.

Heck, maybe go to WDW but do stuff that's not in the parks proper? Splurge and stay at a deluxe like Grand Floridian, do some golfing, have a spa day, dinner at one of the really fancy restaurants, and then a night cap at one of the fine drinking establishments.

To paraphrase a line from Pollyanna- "If you look for the bad in Walt Disney World expecting to find it, you surely will."

Please do not base a decision on the negativity presented on the boards. There are gripes, some legitimate, some petty. Overall, if you are intent on enjoying yourself at WDW, you will enjoy yourself. If you go looking for negativity, you will always find it. I saw multiple things in 2010 that were bad, I did not let it bother me or ruin my vacation. Heck IASW was closed while we were there. It is one of my favorite rides.....oh well, closed, move on and enjoy other stuff.

BE POSITIVE!!:D

Thanks to all who have given advice(so far) and thanks to all those who will offer advice and recommendations later! I really do appreciate it! I don't know what I will decide, but I will have to make a decision at the end of 2014! I guess time will tell!

In my opinion you can't even begin to compare the two. That is like Miller vs Killian's LOL They are miles apart.

I have been to Dollywood. Yes it was nice and kinda cool. And I've been to WDW. FAR more outstanding, far more to do, far more choices, far more awe inspiring moments hands down.

That being said never believe everything you read or hear. What one person perceives in one moment could change moments later. Go into things with a positive attitude. You are showing all this negativity based on the "bad state of the parks" (really???) and heck, your trip isn't for 3 years! LOL
