Would a Doctor Who attraction be popular in the Studios?

First off, our family has been fans of Dr. Who from the early days and I know many people (people I didn't know back then) who have enjoyed it for quite some time. I think it would be a hugely successful add to the parks as there are so many possibilities and it could be such a feast for the eyes.

As for popularity...I think people are putting way too much stock in this factor. How many people are up in arms because they could care less about Avatar, yet most agree that what we've seen to date looks very cool and we'd at least be fans of the attractions/area should this pan out into something exciting on an AK day.

I'd wager yes....mostly because of David Tennant's brand of quirkiness.

America didn't really pay attention to Dr. Who when they revived the series with Christopher Eccleston...but once Tennant signed on, it caused America's interest in the series to spike.

Even folks who have never watched the show are still familiar with Weeping Angels, mostly because of the Tenth Doctor's warning video.

That's because back in the 1970s, when Tom Baker portrayed the Doctor, it was on PBS and only the granola crowd watched PBS back then. Along with Hitchhicker's Guide, Red Dwarf, Monty Python and Faulty Towers. Some of the best TV ever!

Aye, but at the start of the new series (9th Doctor), it was picked up by the Sci Fi Channel (now known as 'SyFy')...problem was they treated it like the proverbial red-headed stepchild. Christopher Eccleston's turn started in 2005, but Sci Fi didn't start broadcasting until 2006. Worse is that they choppily edited it for time and commercial breaks....and then (presumably because "nobody understands British television") opted to air it late at night, after the tent pole shows like "Battlestar Galactica", "Stargate SG-1"....and "ECW Extreme Championship Wrestling".

It's one of the big mistakes that led to the downfall of the channel....right alongside cancelling Stargate in 2007 and failing to pick up Joss Whedon's "Firefly" after Fox cancelled it.

Shortly after David Tennant took over as the 10th Doctor, Sci Fi opted not to renew the rights to the show, it went to BBC America, who showed it without the horrid commercial edits....and the show's viewership has continued to grow ever since.

Basically...the only reason Dr. Who isn't more widely known in the United States is because "SyFy" has a history of being run by a bunch of braindead monkeys who couldn't even find their rear end with a map and compass.

Firstly I have never heard of any ideas of a Doctor Who attraction being built at Disney, it's just something I thought about before we have 100 pages of arguments .

Coming from the UK, Doctor Who has been something I remember from being a small child over 40 years ago. One thing I've noticed in America in recent years however is that Doctor Who seems quite popular there now too. I saw quite a few Tardis tee shirts last year and my wife was asked about the latest tv series by two different people when they spotted her Doctor Who purse.

But out of curiosity does anyone think that it would ever be popular enough to have it's own attraction (again I've heard nothing about this happening)? A dark ride featuring the various Doctors with the tardis appearing or disappearing in different scenes. Daleks, cybermen possibly Davros animatronics and it could be quite fun. But is Doctor Who popular enough over in the states?

I'll let Grand Moff Tarkin answer.....

Careful. Braindead monkeys in charge of a network sounds like the plot of the next SyFy original movie! You don't want to give them ideas, do you?

It's possible. Disney XD is airing the Tennant seasons since Doctor Who is a perfect fit for Disney. They once tried to buy it. Thankfully they didn't get it. I like Disney but I don't want them owning Doctor Who. Nintendo in the other hand is a company they should own. Disney could do wonders with that library of characters.

I wouldn't mind a ride or attraction as long as the show's current production team is involved and Peter Capaldi was the star. An attraction should always feature the current Doctor.

No. I'd rather see Universal own Nintendo. They need a kid-friendly library of IPs far more than Disney does

We were thinking of doing a Dr Who themed party at work, so we did a survey using Survey Monkey, and out of 200 people, only 15 claimed to know anything about it, about 130 had heard of it. So i don't think it is quite popular enough yet.

Yeah, I don't understand why Sci Fi channel didn't pick up Firefly - it's even more popular now than when it was originally broadcasted. Just like the Star Trek OS. And I'm glad BBC America is now broadcasting Dr. Who. It's become the channel Sci Fi could have been with shows like Being Human (like the British version much better than the American), Orphan Black, Primeval, Torchwood, etc. Watching Who right now as I type this. And cannot wait for the season premier tomorrow of Orphan Black.

Couldn't agree more....two of my absolute favorite shows.....they should never have stopped doing SG-1 or Atlantis. Heck even Sanctuary was pretty freaking good, but noooo....there had to be writers strikes and MGM had to go bankrupt and cancel a bunch of shows.....grrrr.

Yeah, not everyone who rides Tower of Terror ever saw an episode of Twilight Zone, and only a minority of Rock & Roller Coaster riders ever bought anything from Aerosmith. Honestly, a Dr. Who attraction would probably benefit the Dr. Who franchise more than it would help Disney bring people through the gates. Either way, a win-win.

I also agree that it should stay with the BBC, for writing purposes and to be a bit different. I love Disney, but I know that Disney execs would force the writing to dumb down. The best episodes of Dr. Who bring detailed history, pathos, feeling, nostalgia and depth. There's a 2 part episode about the "Family of Blood" that will anger you, excite you, perplex you, move you, and ultimately bring you to tears. It takes place just prior to World War I, mostly at a boys Boarding School in an English village. (FYI: the actor who voices Ferb is in it, as a bonus.)

And for true feeling, watch David Tennant's last episode, especially the last 15 minutes. It'll tear you apart.

Honestly, I don't see such scripts being written outside of England; Disney won't do all that with the Dr. Who franchise. Disney does great things, but I fear it would then have all the depth of "Dr. Who with Zack & Cody."

I don't care how...MAKE THIS HAPPEN! PS..we fan girled last year just looking at the Doctor Who merchandise in UK EPCOT. I would be happy if they replaced one of the red phone boxes with the TARDIS. I would bring my cash and my sonic screwdriver!
