World Cup and World Showcase

As many of you no doubt know, the Football (Soccer) World Cup is taking place at the moment. I was wondering, due to a number of the countries around World Showcase participating in it, is anything special going on with regards to the World Cup? i.e. are cast members going around wearing their country's football shirt? or are there football compeitions being held? etc

Just curious..

When I was there last week I noticed a fairly large number of guests I assume were from England wearing what I think are English World Cup team jerseys. World Showcase itself and the CMs there didn't seem to any much of anything tied to the World Cup around.

As an aside, aren't most of the countries in World Showcase playing in the World Cup? I know Mexico, U.S., U.K. (England at least), France, Italy, Germany, Japan (also one of the host countries, yet nothing on display that I saw) are in the tournament. I'm not sure about Norway or Morocco and I know Canada isn't in it. Am I missing any countries?

I know during the Olympics Canada kept a medal count at the outside vender that sells the hockey merchandise. I don't think any of the countries are doing this for the world cup. But I know at the All-Star when I was there last week many English guests had World Cup stuff in their windows.

Those Brits... New Years Eve was interesting... A soccer riot broke out at the Rose and Crown. I ran really fast to get away from there.

It was New Years 99-2000. My bro and I decided it would be cool to go to all the countries when it was midnight in those countries. There was a crowd close to 2000 people singing soccer songs, and 2 guys started a fight, and well, the 1998 people remaingn just started in also. It ws fun to see 20 Disney Security guys try to break it up. I was standing way back by the toy shoppe. It was so packed, I couldn't move. The bathroom lines were close to the wait of an E-ticket attraction. It was fun though.

It was fascinating being at DL Paris last week. About 80% of the guests at the resort were from England and most of the rest were French. Everywhere we went people were talking about the World Cup. The stadium area in Disney Village that housed the Cirque du Soleil-esqe watershow that closed was turned into a viewing are for World Cup games. The people watching last Thursday's France match we could hear them at Newport Bay! But the parks were really quiet for that few hours.

Definitely a fun atmosphere.

Sorry, I thought that the event and the possible consequences it has on the Disney theme parks would have gone under "General Discussion"

It does relate to the Disney parks, unlike the other world cup thread which really is chit chat. Perhaps it should have been titled something different so as not to be confused. :lookaroun

I agree with Maria and also Nut4 Disney. It should either be merged into an existing thread or retitled...

And, my picky's were completely sarcastic, hence the big smiling winky hehe

Heading for the great escape.
The World Cup, a bit like the world series except it involves a game played by teams from around the world.

Can any one explain the earth shattering diffrence between a discusion and a chat?:hammer:
