Hello-

Checking in with yesterday's workout (lower body strength training) and today's workout (chest and shoulders strength training).

I wasn't very active at my MIL's and I drank too much white wine. So, I am just getting back into my work out and eating the foods I like to eat.

I am really glad to be back in my home. I love sleeping in my bed and having peace and quiet. 🥰

Happy Monday! I have resisted the scale... so no new numbers, but I know my clothes over the weekend were fitting more loosely than when I first bought them. So, some kind of progress. Of course, after Saturday, I was feeling pretty bloated and my tummy is still recovering. So, I'm definitely going to give it a bit before I even think of trying. I went up to OU for Family Weekend with Kendall and while I wasn't completely awful and evil with what I ate, we drank quite a bit on Saturday and my food choices still could have been a bit better. Either way, it was my break day and I still think we walked a good 7-8 miles over the course of the day. I also hit the gym yesterday before meeting up with K for lunch and then driving home. I didn't walk as much as I normally would yesterday, but nearly 2 hours in the gym isn't insignificant either.

Speaking of loss goals...I was in Ks bedroom Saturday, looked down at her open jeans drawer, and there they were!!! The goal jeans that she promised she didn't take that I've been looking for that went missing. Yeah, they came home with me! I'll wait until the end of the week to see where I'm at with fit.

All in all, it was a fun time. We did some tailgating, we had lunch and drinks with a view (see vid), we did some shopping, had some great sushi yesterday, and I even went bar hopping with her and some of her sisters on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the other parents that were supposed to join us got tired and decided to stay in. I was feeling tired beforehand too, but I knew I'd get my second (well, fifth by this point) wind as soon as I hit a spot with music I knew and a familiar vibe to my college days. It's too bad because most of the parents I saw at the bars were having a blast. I also was able to use it as sort of a teaching tool as much of the culture and unspoken rules felt the same. I didn't stay out until last call, but I still had a respectable outing and made it back to my hotel around 1:30 am.

I don't really follow NFL. But they were walking around Dublin with their terrible towels and Steelers regalia. This is just me, but I don't want to look like a mark when I'm overseas. They played the Vikings. I honest to goodness only saw 1 person wearing a Vikings t-shirt v the countless people with Steelers stuff on.
Sounds about right. I've been to games where it was Ravens verses Steelers and holy cow. One time it was me, a friend, and our dads. Our dads had seats separated from us. Her dad was really nervous. My dad wasn't except for the fact that it was a Steelers game (we were teens and it was also a night game). Fortunately, the Ravens blew them out, and some Steelers fans who were sitting near them left partway through, so my dad came and had us move closer to them; I know her dad felt better about having us within view. Mine was much more chill.

They're one of the major NFL rivalries, although it's kind of cooled because (with the exception of this year) Ravens are usually contenders, and Steelers are just...mediocre. When I was a kid, it was THE rivalry. Then we decided we hated the Patriots and later Kansas City more than each other, lol. But their fans still have a reputation for being obnoxious in large groups.

True, but I think prep makes a difference in most cases.

Like, I don't eat tomatoes straight or in salads, but I will eat tomato sauce, tomatoes on a sandwich, or salsa fresca. I don't like most veggies straight, but if you throw them in something, I'll eat them. I really am not a broccoli fan, but I eat it as part of an Asian dish or in a tomato sauce with pasta.

Sweet potatoes for me will 100% ruin a dish they're in. I don't care how they're prepped; I think they are nasty. My first job out of college had a chilli cook off. Everyone loves this one chilli and said "oh, you have to try it." I thought it was nasty. I finally looked. Yeah, someone had the bright idea to put sweet potatoes in there.

That's where I say it is absolutely the one food that I hate. I don't care if someone insists that maybe I haven't had it prepared right. Most other foods I'll try if prepped differently. Sweet potatoes? Absolutely not. I have tried them and always regretted it.
Fair point. I don't like raw tomatoes, but I like Spaghetti sauce, pizza, though I don't like salsa. And I love potatoes, but can't stand potato salad, which is one of those things that everyone has their own special recipe that they always say is different from everyone else's recipe and they always taste exactly the same and is disgusting. But I believe they all have mustard and mayonaise in them, neither of which I will eat. I can't even stand the smell of them. I will eat mayonaise in ranch dressing, and that seems to be the one exception. I don't like unmelted cheese. I don't like most condiments, and I don't like cold sauces like on a pasta salad, for example.

I love my vegetables, but I am not a fan of green pepper. And I don't like cucumber. And all those people who say "You have to try something multiple times before you like it!"...if it tastes nasty the first time I try it, I'm not trying it again. There are plenty of other foods I DO like, and I'll stick to those. There's no point to me in continuously trying to make myself like something that I don't. And I know, because my mom always made me try things over and over and over, all throughout my childhood. It did not make me like ANYTHING that I had not previously liked. Your tastes do change over time, so sometimes things you didn't like before will taste better years later. Like, I didn't like zucchini. Now I love it. And there are some cheeses that I wouldn't eat before that I like sometimes now, as long as they are melted. But things like coriander still taste nasty. Trying something over and over has never ever made me decide I actually liked something.

Had my diabetes check yesterday. My sugar was up a little again, but I lost a kilo and a half, so the specialist is pretty sure that the sugar will go down again by next time, and it's probably just the stress of looking for and starting a new job that has been affecting it so much. It should even out now. We hope.

I had a High Tea on Sunday to say goodbye to two coworkers who left. It was the most disappointing high tea I have ever experienced. Usually there's SOMETHING I can eat besides the really sweet stuff. I'm pretty picky with things like sandwiches. I don't like things like egg salad, potato salad, tuna salad, and I don't like fish. High Teas tend to have a lot of salad sandwiches with those things in them....cucumber sandwiches, salmon, tuna, egg salad, so I am not a fan of high tea anyway, and I went to breakfast with A to make sure I wouldn't starve when I went to the high tea, but the only thing I got was a cup of tomato soup and 6 bites of dessert stuff. Usually there will be something like Quiche, or scones, or a tartlett, a fancy grilled cheese, etc. Not a thing.

Chocolate cake pop, brownie, cinnamon tortilla type thing, red velvet cookie with which chocolate, butter cake, and he called the other thing a blondie, but that was NOT a blondie....it was more like millionaires shortbread. These were all just bite-sized treats, so one of each all put together is like one dessert. They were decent, but for the most part, I can make better at home.

So there was a focaccia with hummus (which I don't like) and avocado, a sandwhich with ham, cheese, tomato, and boiled egg...the only thing I would eat on that would be the ham, and only if it hadn't fraternized with the tomato or egg, another thing with ham and tomato and some sort of spread, a tortilla wrap with egg salad and cucumber, and something with salmon and tuna. So there wasn't a thing that I could eat. I've been to high teas before and I can always manage to find something that doesn't have a cold sauce/spread/condiments, unmelted cheese, tomato, cucumber, fish, or salads. They WERE really good about the fact that I don't drink tea and they happily gave me a pepsi max instead. That's not always the case. I once had a high tea where they acted like it was the BIGGEST inconvenience to have to pour me a glass of orange juice instead, even though they served OJ on their regular menu. And then they charged me like 7 euros for that tiny glass of OJ. The one on Sunday actually served us all a glass of OJ alongside our tea.

I got home and heated up some leftover brussels sprouts from the night before. E and I were talking about what we would make if we did a high tea for our friends. We decided on Quiche (which she won't eat), and Melted Brie on toast with zuchinni or appel and honey, maybe some scones, some upside-down apple or pear pastries, probably brownies, and some mini bagettes with rosted vegetables, and some with sauteed mushrooms and cream cheese. And some kind of soup...probably mushroom bisque or butternut squash, depending on people's food tastes, because a lot of people don't like mushrooms, even though we LOVE them. And we'd probably make some lemon tartlets, and maybe some poppyseed bread or zucchini bread.

Anyway, it's always fun to think about. We enjoy baking together and just working in the kitchen with Spotify on so we can belt along to whatever soundtrack or playlist we're in the mood for. So this is just for fun, not an actual plan.


Totally off topic:
The zoo we went to last week announced the birth of a baby Giraffe like 2 days after we were there, but then yesterday they announced that he/she already passed away. So sad. I was really looking forward to going to the zoo again as soon as they were out of isolation, but I guess that's not going to happen.

When there is something I don't like, I will get someone who will say, "Have you tried it batter-dipped and deep fried?" Aren't I just tasting the batter then? If you have to cover up the taste of something with something else, I'm not really eating the true essence of the thing I don't like, am I? What is the point?

I agree about tastes changing. I used to dislike avocado and I really enjoy it now. The same with dill. I don't like dill pickles and I think I just linked the two together for the longest time. But I like that in certain dishes now, too.

You're making me want to post my Dublin afternoon tea photo! I am sorry you didn't like afternoon tea. My husband and I go to one in Phoenix a couple of times a year. I don't like the salmon sandwich and my husband detests egg salad, so we swap sandwiches. I love Twix bars, so I would love millionaire shortbread. I am not certain I would eat something of the sandwiches you've described, either. Those sandwiches with the cucumber and tomato, front and center? Naw.

I did a pyramid-style leg strength training workout today. I might be in trouble tomorrow; I can feel the pre-soreness tightness in my legs. I resubscribed to this fitness app that is based in the UK--the dollar to pound exchange--oof. I churn in and out of this app, because she is a motor mouth. I don't mind form cues and words of encouragement, but I don't need to know you've upped your fibrous veggie intake and now you are gassy. 😂 I think she is trying to be relatable, but I find it distracting. It's a shame, because the workouts themselves are effective and challenging. I love the workouts and they are why I always resubscribe.

Back in June, I booked a weekend trip to Chicago for this month. Now I am wondering if I should cancel it? I was really looking forward to going. I haven't been to Illinois in 3 years and that was to visit my grandmother, who was out in the suburbs. But, it's been almost 10 years since I have gone into the city. I was really looking forward to going to the Art Institute, an architecture river cruise and just seeing where the day takes us. I have reservations for this really funky restaurant that looks fun. I just have this feeling in the pit of my stomach stuff's going to pop off there soon. I booked our flights on Southwest on points and I think we can cancel our hotel a few days before. I'll keep watching and make a call. This whole thing feels off to me, though.

The orange cat came around this morning. I fed him. I know I shouldn't, but it's so hard to say no to him. He has these sad eyes with soft, little meows. I know Callie doesn't like it when I feed him, but I can't not feed him. The good thing is he doesn't linger after he eats, he leaves immediately. I don't think he has plans of usurping Callie. We wouldn't let that happen anyway.

After all the flight stuff today with lack of controllers I might be a little worried too. As for the city, I don't want to be political but with Guard troops arriving or possibly arriving, there might be some protests. I don't know if I would cancel because of that but I would watch flights.

What is the name of the funky restaurant you found? We go to Chicago to visit family around Christmas and we are always looking for fun places.

Yeah, dill is one I don't like. I don't like pickles, and I don't like things that are pickled, but I also don't like ranch dressing if it has dill in it. And there are a lot of foods now where they combine ingredients....like Cheeseburger pods, or cheeseburger spring rolls, where they put the ground beef and cheese in, but also pickles, ketchup, mustard, all in that wrapper or dough, and I naively thought it would just be ground beef and cheese and had a rude awakening.

But also with the "Have you tried it this way?" crowd, batter-dipped and deep fried is also not healthy. Why would I take a healthy food and make it UNHEALTHY just so I could stomach it? I already like broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach, green beans, carrots,zucchini, red bell pepper....I don't think not liking ONE vegetable is a big deal. It's not like I'm not getting enough veggies in my diet. And I'll eat a lettuce salad with a bit of ranch dressing....I don't think the lack of tomato or cucumber is going to kill me. I get enough nutrients in other ways. And the things like cold sauces, condiments, etc....those are all high in sugar and sodium and fats. They aren't healthy foods, so why should I try to learn to like something that's bad for me? That burger is better for me WITHOUT the ketchup and mustard and pickles. People are just really pushy about wanting everyone to like the same things they like. It's like they are offended if you don't like what they do.

Please do post the photo! I'm curious about an actual afternoon tea. It's a UK thing, right? The Dutch are terrible at traditional foreign foods. They try to change everything, but then they advertise it as like "American breakfast!" But it is absolutely not American. For example, we stayed at a center parcs place and they advertised an American breakfast, and I was excited because things like waffels, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, are not things people over here eat. Breakfast is pretty much an assortment of breads with cheese or cold cuts. So I was thinking of all the American things I couldn't wait to eat. It was scrambled eggs with salmon in them, which I had NEVER heard of, and bread with cheese or cold cuts. And they had corn flakes. That was their idea of an American breakfast.....I was like...they have obviously never BEEN to the US and had breakfast in a restaurant. No hashbrowns, no sausages, no bacon, no plain eggs, no pancakes, no waffels....NOTHING that would be in a traditional American breakfast. So I know they do that, and I've never had a high tea outside of the Netherlands, so I'd like to see what a real one is like!

The millionaire shortbread was good, but REALLY sweet....they should have added just a tiny bit of salt to cut through some of that sweetness. For Dutch baked goods, they were good. It's only in the last few years that the Netherlands has started introducing American desserts like brownies and cheesecake. For the longest time, I had to make everything from scratch because it wasn't available here. Now I make everything from scratch because what's available isn't very good. Red Velvet is traditionally chocolate....it was a chemical reaction that made it red. But now that chemical process to treat the flour is different, so it no longer changes the color, so people add red food coloring. Over here, they make it with berries, so it's fruit flavored, not chocolate. And most of the cakes/brownies are very dry and dense rather than fluffy and moist. It's a completely different animal. These brownies were actually pretty good as far as Dutch brownies go, but they weren't as good as mine. The cakepops were not very cakey....they were hard and crumbly, which was kind of weird...very dense. It's just all a bit off. They give everything the name and appearance of the traditional food, but they make it differently, so it's not really that thing anymore. There was just a news bit last week about this Chinese woman who made a documentary about a popular dish in Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands. Turns out it is not Chinese. It was made by Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands to appeal to Dutch people, but it's not something they would eat themselves. I wondered, because my husband had called it sweet and sour pork, but it was so different from the Sweet and Sour Pork I got back home at this Chinese restaurant where this woman had immigrated from China and opened the restaurant, and her mother (who spoke no English) cooked. It was a partially open kitchen, and her mom would stand in the back and watch you taste the food and then raise her eyebrows and give a thumbs up. Then she would look so happy when you gave her the thumbs up of approval. It was so sweet. Anyway, it was all traditional recipes she brought over from China, so it was all authentic food, and none of it was anything like the "babi pangang" here. But that's what the Dutch do. They take a food from another country and try to make it Dutch.

I did a pyramid-style leg strength training workout today. I might be in trouble tomorrow; I can feel the pre-soreness tightness in my legs.

Not sure if you track any kind of macros for your food intake, but I have found that nearly all of that workout soreness has gone away since upping my protein intake. I don't think it's an actual cure, but supposedly it will cut or reduce the soreness if you take a decent amount of protein before or after your workout. I guess it helps speed up muscle repair. I felt some soreness a couple of weeks ago (first time in ages) from a new planking routine on a non-arm and non-leg day. It helped tremendously. I've been trying to leave enough room in my daily caloric intake so that I still have room for a protein boost after my evening gym time.
