WoL vs. Horizons......

I was sitting here and had a random thought... isn't the WoL pavilliion large enough to house M:S? From the looks of the pavillion, it should have fit. Now my imposing question.. I know right now (and justifiably so) there is alot of concern about loosing WoL.. well.. if you could choose between loosing WoL or Horizons.. which would it be.. and why...

If there was a way to fix the decaying building of Horizons, I would have loved to see it stay. I didn't really care for WoL for some reason. Motion Simulators make me sick so I didn't like Body Wars and after that, I didn't really have any other interest in the pavillion. Horizons was a great attraction and I wish it could have stayed.

I was never a diehard WoL fan until I realized all of the quality experiences at Epcot were being taken away. If I had a choice, I'd rather have Horizons.

But I'm now a big Wonders of Life fan as I have come to appreciate (and identify) what makes Disney so great. Cranium Command has made it to the top ten, as soon will Energy. I wouldn't have even believed this back in 1994 when we had Motion, Imagination, etc. But as things get chopped away, your focus goes right down that same line and into the next best things.

Wonders of Life is one of Epcot's largest pavilions. . . and it could have easily hosted Mission Space. In fact, Mission Space is so small that Disney considered pushing it closer to or farther away from Wonders of Life in order to expand or add a new attraction in the future (but it chose against this longterm plan).

Funny how Body Wars was a similator (comparing this to the main attraction at Mission Space). If Mission Space had also a TRUE area for families, no McDonalds playplaces, but a more space-ed center or an animatronic show, I'd be in a lot of support for it. Wonders of Life was the 1989 attraction that only INCLUDED the 1989 version of Mission Space. . .

But from what I hear Horizons pretty much had to close, as did Journey into Imagination. (all based on structural issues) There is no true reason for Wonders of Life, and it's so easy to bring it back to life. So this is a truly unjust reason for closure.

The only extinct attraction at Epcot that I can say 100% in full that should have never been replaced was Kitchen Kabaret. There is some reason for the others (Horizons POTENTIAL sinkhole, JII POTENTIAL sinking of the turntable).

I would have let WoL close. Horizons was somewhat outdated, espcieally in the way it was presented Alas the projector screens and special effects, and yes some stuff was 1980s future, but the idea and yurn for a "beautiful tomorrow", and these great destinations and cities was a great essence to EPCOT Center. I still question the whole "oh we had to tear down the building cause the omnimovers were gonna rip it apart", well gee, if they ahd that much concern why didnt they just blow up the damn thing instead of letting it rot for months and months. It was a great ride, it had potentional, and should have alteast stayed past the 2000 cellebration.

WoL, well I'll keep to myself on that cause Grizz would wack me in the head if I knew what I thought about WoL. :zipit:

Anyhow I just feel Epcot [as it is called now], is pulling away from its original EPCOT Center. We need fresh new 21st century things to keep us going for the fuutre, rides like Energy, and SSE have great potentional and need help in order to let that go on. I welcome Mission: Space it is a great fun ride, but has its problems, as does Test Track which has nothing to do with our future. While Mission: Space though a thrill ride does give us a 21st century hope for a mars style space age thing.

I welcome change, I'm no diehard nostralgic person, but as long as we can keep things from the past expand on them, and improve them technologicalmwise, then eya I'll for change.

Anyways yea I would have left Wol Go and Horizons stay.

It really pains me to say it, but I won't miss WoL. I was there the week it opened way back in the 80's, and it remains the only Disney ride (Body Wars, that is) that has ever made me ill. I feel like the heart of Epcot was ripped out with the removal of Horizons and WoM, but WoL has always been a second-rate pavillion in my book.

______-education belongs in junior high, not at WDW. :)

Wait, what's different about Imagination now? Did something change structurally in the ride? It's been forever since I rode the original, and rode the new version only last November. I heard a big reason for Horizons closing was structural, but I never knew there was a structural reason for the major rehab of Imagination.

Does anyone have any more info on this?

Actually this is the first time I've ever heard of structure problems hendering Imagination. But it does raise a certain question in me.. if 2 of the original pavilians are having problems with their foundations, shouldn't it be logical that the rest of them do as well? I figured the initial changing of Imagination was a money saving thingy so this is totally new news to me. Also, I thought the turntable was still there just not being used in the 2nd and 3rd versions. Grizz gimme some info here..LOL

By the way, to answer my own question....

I sadly never got the chance to ride Horizons, but if it was anything near WoM in quality then I can truly say Epcot lost something really good. As far as WoL, I liked most of what was in there but even I have to admit it needs some updates. You notice I said UPDATES not REPLACEMENT. Which brings me to yet another concern I haven't spoke on yet....

Given how bad they screwed up Imagination with each of the "updates", I'm starting to truly get concerned about IASW. From what I'm hearing they are totally re-doing the whole ride. Let's just pray they don't go all cheapy on it and leave ALL of the AA's in place if not add some new ones to join to the current collection. AA's were something Walt thought was great, need I say more?? And with the stripping of Epcot of AA's, this is a bad sign for IASW.

The JII structural issue was as follows: The massive carousel-style turntable was so heavy that it started sinking into the ground (similar scenario today at Carousel of Progress). The track that led into and out of the JII carousel started changing around, and maintenence had to keep going back to adjust it. It became too costly. . .and BAM! JII becomes 3/4 Gift Shop and 1/4 crap ride. THE END. . .

. . .or is it?? ;)

Hmm, what about the sinkhole that's under the Universe of Energy that's full of water?

LMAO. The Universe of Energy has 2 giant turn tables of its own, and one small one. Are they sinking too?

Serious...they can't reopen it because it'd just take too much. Nemo hollograms were already designed to be installed there for the LS rehab. . .

Alas, no sea cabs in the foreSEAable future.
