I'm giving up refined and added sugar as I've gained a lot of weight in the last few years and feel generally lousy. Reading up about it is scary as they say it's like giving up nicotine (I've never smoked)
I already stopped eating chocolate when I ate the last of my Ghiradelli from my trip, but, now it's the crunch. It's shocking what foods have added sugar; deli meats, bacon and many breads. I'm not going Keto, but, I'm hoping I can deal with the sugar withdrawal symptoms as they sound awful.
Day one is almost over with zero sugar, except the naturally occurring ones in fresh tomatoes. Phew.

I lost 60lbs and I didn't give up anything.
I wouldn't recommend giving anything up completely or you are more likely to fail.
Key is moderation.
You know things that are "bad" for you and things that are "good" for you.
First thing is to lower (not eliminate) the "bad" and increase (not make it your only option) the good.
Eventually you'll realize that you actually ENJOY the healthier options and don't crave the bad options as much.
Just as a little example I used to drink soda like 6 days a week. I started trying to lower that to say 3 times a week.
Eventually I actually started to PREFER water especially when I was eating a more filling meal because the soda just filled me up with gas quickly.
Now I have soda whenever I want to which ends up being on average once a week with pizza. But if I want it another time that week well then I have it and don't feel guilty because I know I'm not drinking it every day.

The only way for me to loose weight is to walk.
I have tried to stop sugar and fat. You hold this regime just a time, it's a drug.
But rather than going to the grocery store at car, i walk 1h (round trip). And without changing my food habits, i've lost 10kg in 3 months.
And the cherry on the top, i love now walk a lot, with my favorites musics in my ears.

Hope you will succeed !

Okay end of the first week and I lost 5lbs! I have found it easier to quit sugar than I thought, simply because I made sure I had nothing with added sugar or forms of sugar in the cupboards before I started. I don't have sugar in my tea and coffee so that wasn't too difficult and I don't drink sugary soft drinks or alcohol, I'm eating way more veggies and simple protein, my favourite meal has been diced spuds fried in a small amount of olive oil, bacon with most of the fat cut off and making sure it had no added sugar (sugar in bacon?) add an egg and scramble it all together. I'm not cutting down on any food group, fruit is out for the moment, but, it will be introduced after a month. I'm hardly starving myself or depriving myself. I had to do something after a weight gain of 30lbs during Covid and heading towards 60. I do walk a lot, 6 miles at least 4 times a week, but, I'm slower and more tired afterwards, so I'd rather do this than some faddy diet or even weight watchers, which I found hard sell of 'low cal' alternatives at high prices and a bit complicated, although that was quite a few years ago, before Oprah bought it. I have to say I'm enjoying it because I'm keeping it simple and that helps. Also living alone helps and I never have takeouts. I've always cooked my meals at home.

My brother went Keto a couple years ago and started working out on a simple exercise bike and has lost over 100 pounds.

I “only” need to lose 15 pounds but when I looked into keto I decided I can’t do it, I love pasta, potatoes, and bread too much. Instead I’m leaning towards a similar approach as you, trying to avoid sugar is impossible but I’m trying to cut out “added sugar” as much as possible. My biggest problem so far has been headaches from drinking less soda.

Congrats on losing the pounds.

When you said in an earlier post that you gave up chocolate I almost died. I just couldn't. :)

Keep it up.
If I had to give up caffeine then I'd be in trouble. I did crave a Snickers bar one day, but, decided the 30 minute round trip to the shop was too much hassle for 60 seconds of joy. Giving up donuts with my coffee in my local supermarket cafe has been the hardest, but, I did it!

OP sorry but this seems unsustainable and unhealthy.

You may lose a lot in a short time but keeping it off could very easily be a problem.

And walking 6 miles a day on the days you walk???

Kinda seems like a losing battle from the get go.

How long did it take for the weight to go on? You said during covid so in the last 2 years it creeped up?
Taking it off 5lbs in a week is not the way to go in my opinion. more like 5lbs a month. That way you're doing it slow and steady and by the holidays you'll be looking amazing.

Snickers, Reese's Cups, going Trick or Treating at Halloween even though I will be turning 15 this year and having to give up all that chocolate. I would just die. :D

How is it going? I had to do the no added/refined sugar thing for the first time during a pregnancy, to help prevent Preeclampsia--I wish I could have seen the look on my face when my OB/GYN handed me the packet of info about the diet, lol. I did the anti-inflammatory diet and I definitely notice a difference in how my body feels and looks when I follow that diet, but the first couple weeks are HARD! You are lucky that it is close to summer because there's going to be a lot of fruit and sweet vegetables available to help you kill those cravings. If you are trying to avoid added sugar you also need to avoid sweet corn as it is modified to act on your body like refined sugar would, watermelon is ok though, at least according to the anti-inflammatory diet.
