Will Universal's new Budget Hotel hurt Disney?

Read about Universal's new Budget hotel they are planning. Seems in the mode of All Star Resorts.
About Time.....Love Disney to death but occasionally we like to visit Universal. We love staying on site and realize that this new resort will not offer front of line perk. But still will be big draw for families who previously could not afford Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, or Portifino. So all of our time has been spent in Disney...This will surely make difference for us and will afford us to sometimes now split our visit between Disney and Universal.....what do you think?

I don't think it will hurt at all really.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
For those who plan to include Uni as part of their vacation, I suspect there will be lot more split stays, i.e.- 4 or 5 nights at POP and 2/3 nights at Cabana Bay Beach Resort, rather than spending all 7 nights at POP and just day-tripping it to Universal.

Agreed. If you are planning Uni into your vacation I think this new hotel could make an impact. If going to Uni is more of a "well, we're in Orlando I guess we should check it out" type of thing, then no.

I don't think a lot right now.

My reasoning is this is only one new hotel Universal is building. If you compare Disney to Universal, WDW has more hotel rooms than Universal does. There is still more people going WDW than Universal's two park also.

What the budget hotel does help Universal is people that have plans going to Universal on their Vacation and want to spend 2 days there at least.

I can't predict long term. If Universal builds a water park, I can see it hurt Disney more to a point. A Water Park being built would attraction people to the hotels if already have plans on going to Universal's two theme parks.

Im not really sure. I can tell you...we're planning a 7-8 day trip (our longest one EVER and Im nervous about it), and we talked about going over to Uni, but decided against it. I love the Disney bubble and Uni, while a great part...it's atmosphere is just.......not where I wanna be on vacation.

It won't help them.

After staying at Uni, I decided to make that home base and drive to Disney. They have nicer hotels with better service. Disney can't compete with PBH. They don't even try.

I don't know what the new one will be like, but my guess is that they'll do it right. They usually do.

I believe so. It's moderately priced, looks fantastic, and is close to the parks. Factor that in with all of the major expansions that are under construction, Universal really will draw a ton of more people in.

One Moderate Hotel? No. I would say if you asked the average person (not anyone that is a member here) if Universal had any hotels they wouldnt know.

If you ask the average person, Disney's Florida resort consists of two parks: Disney World and Epcot Center.

So that's a moot point. Universal is trying to reel in the people with enough interest in their property to do some homework. They're the ones likely to stay there.

no omg. nothing Universal does will damage Disney. will they put a dent in overall attendance? yes, i mean they're putting in more Potter and throwing Transformers into USO park. there's going to be more guests flocking to or at least wanting to go to Universal more than to Disney. but no, it's not going to "hurt" them or "kick them while they're down". Disney is not down. Disney is merely backhand slapped, but they'll be fine.

We need time for things to happen.
I don't think one moderate resort that doesn't offer the "front of the line" perks would cause any real cause a hit to WDW. I wouldn't pay the extra coin just for proximity - especially when you can get a very close "partner" hotel for dirt cheap.

We've been doing a couple of days at UNI while we stay at a WDW resort the last couple o' years, This year we tacked two days onto our vaca and we're actually going to stay at UNI's sister hotel. But the fact is we didn't reduce our stay at WDW --- so they didn't feel the impact.

This is a direct contradiction. It's not like Universal is trying to put Disney out of business. That's not a realistic expectation (not to mention their continued existence is beneficial to other area attractions.) Merely putting a "dent" in Disney's attendance or resort occupancy is in fact a victory.
