Will this work through air port security?

Ok so in Sept I am going to propose to my girlfriend in disney. I am going to have a $5000 ring that I need to bring with me. She cant know in any way!!

The ring is going to be made of white gold. I do not want to check it due to the value but i am worried they will say something at the metal detectors. I can put it on my carry on but do you think they will search it or take it out to look? how do diamonds show up on the xray?

I fly all the time with jewelry in my purse or carry-on, and TSA has never said a word. And it would be difficult for your girlfriend to see your bag on x-ray, and even more difficult for her to see a ring unless she was studying it.

I would worry more about losing it - make sure you put it in a zippered, inside compartment.

When I did this I just put it in my hand luggage. As long as you've not got anything else in there that looks offensive, you'll be just fine.

The problem with keeping it on you (especially if it's in a box) is that if you do get chosen for a quick pat-down / frisk, they'll ask what it is which could lead to problems!

Put it in your carry on but be aware of where it is at all times. If you do get pulled aside for an extra search or pat down hopefully you get lucky and the airport you are in has a separate isolated section for that. When my boyfriend's bag was searched I was not allowed to stand next to him. He only got searched because he had an ankle brace on that set the new body scanners off. We were maybe 10 minutes delayed luckily we always show up with at least an hour.

I think you won't have problems getting it through security. Remember people with expensive stuff fly everyday. They typically don't draw attention to it unless there are other questionable items in the bag as well.

I have a theory about engagement rings - You should never spend more on one than you would a TV. If you have a $5,000 TV, you're good to go.

Glad my husband didn't have that theory. We've gone through several TVs, but my ring is still as beautiful as it was 35 years ago. And the stones will still be valuable for decades, if not centuries - only settings change. You can't say that about a TV.

I'm interested to hear where this theory came from.

I always hear it is suppose to be 2 months pay (or more) because it is suppose to be a symbol of how well you can take care of your future bride. I know this is an old tradition but I know that in the south where I come from what your engagement ring looks like says a lot about the man you are with or at least people try to read that much into it.

Agree with the zippered inside pocket. I put all my metal items in my carry-on before screening, just less hassle. Just in case put stinky socks in the pocket also as a deterrent.

When in September are you planning to do this? I bet you could find a few forum members that will be there at the same time and would help you get some great pictures if you're doing it in a public place.

I think you'll be fine just putting it in your carry-on. No one should say anything about it. I've been through security with stranger things (guitar gear, lunchboxes, records). You'll be fine :)

If she loves you, it will be perfect - whether she needs a magnifying glass to see the stone, or her hand gets tired from the weight. The fact that it is from your heart is the most important thing - and that you didn't compute the cost of the ring with a TV, or any other guideline.

The ring - price theory: I told that to my fiance about 6 months before we got engaged that the ring should be about 2 months pay. He is a medical student so he makes no money. So he said "for you baby - 5 months pay."

And he brought the ring on the plane and stuff too. He said he put the box in his shoe and actually kept it there for the first 3 days of our trip - and I never even thought about looking in his shoes (then again I never even thought he'd propose so...there ya go!)

Hey Tractorm.... Rest easy my friend. Keep that bad boy in your carry-on, let it go through the Xray machine. She won't think twice about it.

My first trip to Disney was in 2004, I proposed to my now wife. The ring was also made of white gold and I had no issues. Of course, the fact that I waited until day 3 to propose was more of an issue! Think about it, you're only other options would be to empty it into a bin (ie your keys, wallet, etc), check it with luggage (risk of getting lost, no thanks), or ship it (no thanks again).

I was in the same boat back in August and what I did was have it in its box, wrapped in tissue paper, and then that all wrapped in its own little plastic bag. I then placed it at the bottom of my backpack's biggest pocket and put all my other carry on items above it. I was incredibly nervous about being selected for a random search or something but my plan was that if my bag was selected I was going to just go along with it and just ask my gf to find a bathroom or something and get me some paper towels because I was sweating like a pig. Luckily I never had to go down that road. The proposal was planned for next day after arrival so I didn't have to wait too long or keep it hidden for too long (thank goodness).

Good luck! (I'd say congrats but let's not jinx anything ;) )

It should be whatever you can afford. If at some point, you can afford a nicer ring, you can always upgrade. That's what I did with my wife. The ring I mean...not the wife.:)
