May 1, 1989 A true working studio/theme park opened, what a beautful place. not only could you enjoy the theme park, but you could go catch the New mickey mouse club, the ________ tracy show..et el, a true DISNEY-MGM!! on movies, and showbusiness. Of course the wonderful wonderful animation studio that made, Mulan, Lilo and stitch, and Brother Bear, 3 Very successful films. Unfortunly, in the last 5-7 the park has become more a of Magic Kingdom than a studio, not much is shot there any more, And of course, uncle Mike and his hontcho's deiced to put 200 artitists out of business. The distruction of residental street, and the fact that great musical shows such as hunchback anddick tracy dont exsist.

Will this show Save the studio and still make it a Studio?

(side note) I dunno why but for some reason everytime i im in MGM, i think about Roger Rabbit, maybe its cause it came out in 89, but theres just somthing about it

LMA = Lights Motors Action

I think LMA heads back to the original theming of MGM. I loved the original feel to MGM, in that it was a working movie studio on a smaller scale than Hollywood. They actually showed you how they make movies and you could see shows in production. Now sadly, very little remains of the original MGM. The guest today barely sees any of the soundstages, nothing in production, no live animators or animation studios, and very little to no streetmosphere. The only thing hanging on from the original MGM in my opinion is The Great Movie Ride and Indiana Jones.

While I like some of the newer additions to MGM, they don't fit in with the original theming. I look forward to LMA, but can 1 attraction really rebound a park's attendance in the long term? That I am not sure of.

I agree about the Roger Rabbit thing. I feel the same way for some reason. Especially in the Backlot Area.

First went to MGM in 1993 on my first visit. I love the park and it is my favourite, however the last few visits I've found some things to be going a little stale. It does need some improvement. Little things here and there would improve it greatly. A few new shows, that kind of thing. And definatly more Muppets!

Anyway, was the D@#k Tracey show good? Never got a chance to see it. Any video or picks? Where was it?

(Also, can we not say his name? It can be rude certain context but surely we can say it? No?)

It's always been an illusion, it's just that they used to try to make the illusion more convincing. For instance, they used to put fake commercial/music video sets up on the backlot tour and tell you to be quiet - you weren't seeing real filming, they were all actors.

AFAIK, the only real productions that ever had their home at MGM were the MMC and that Sheena show or whatever that stripper woman was on, and a few commercials/second unit shots (i.e. later seasons of Golden Girls used the exterior of the MGM facade). Everything else was fake.

LMA won't change this, I don't believe. To be honest, I think the public has had enough of behind the scenes filmmaking - so much so that the illusion is lost on most these days. Nothing about filmmaking is a mystery in 2005.
The practical effects that used to be interesting are outdated now that virtually everything is done in CGI. LOL, that tired Earthquake pre-show over at USF was outdated when it opened in 1990.

That's why I'm hoping they just drop a lot of the supposed behind the scenes stuff at LMA and focus on the stunts. I have a feeling they will tighten it up some before it offically opens, but I don't think it's going to get as sussinct as I'd hope.

It's for the same reason I'd prefer an Indy ride versus the Indy show, or why the GMR is the finest attraction in the park to me - anyone can easily find out how films are made by watching DVD making-ofs, reading a book, or watching any number of TV shows. People don't need to go to a theme park to see that. What they can't do on their own is "live" the movies - I think many more people would get excited about being a part of their favorite films and not simply finding out redundant and/or outdated information about how they were made.

I believe they've also filmed Ernest Saves Christmas there, too. Probably some of the film sequences in rides have been shot there (like Ellen's Energy Adventure). But, yeah, besides that, no one has really wanted to fly all the way across the country from LA to film movies in soundstages half the size of the ones in Hollywood. I think it would have been a much better idea for Disney to make this sort of park in Aneheim, much better than DCA. (But then I guess you get the conflict where locals in LA wouldn't really enjoy going to a park based on filming movies, which I'm sure they see enough of there. Sort of like the problem DCA has, a park about California, having problems getting locals interested in the park.)

Still, MGM is my favorite park, though I do agree it needs something new. Especially a new family ride.

I just wanna know what is up with everyone lately? Why are people thinking about the way that things are now is going to be the demize of Disney. I think that Disney is for the most part still a wonderful place to visit, and while things have changed and are not the same as they used to be, I don't see how any of that means that these parks are doomed for failure. I know we all love they heydays of things...I mean count me as one of them, but things have to change to fit in with today's society and like it or not, we all need to get used to it. (Also, remember that you're still in the happiest place on earth! :sohappy: )

Ermm... okay...

I really wish you guys would stop using the word "demise" (even though you spelled it wrong lol) on these boards. None of the boards are demised or even CLOSE to being demised, so just quit it. The parks are still kickin it and are getting improvments and getting played around with to further expand and get more money for the shareholders. And now while the disney people have made some mistakes, I loved LMA when I say it in DL Paris so I think it might add to the... "savement" of the park.

Geez, so depressing.

I actually love the MGM park... particularly because you can see characters there that you find no where else. I also like the accessibility of the characters. We have seen Hercules & Meg, Mulan & Shang, Jafar, Milo & Kida, Buzz, Woody & Jessie, Green Army Men, and more. So much fun!

The LMA show (which we saw on a Travel Channel show about Disneyland Paris) looks like it is going to be a wonderful addition... and an Indiana Jones ride like the one in CA would be AMAZING! Don't get me wrong, I love the IJ show, but the ride is simply spectacular. New stuff is always welcome... change is good for a park like MGM... the Magic Kingdom has that timeless quality that never gets old, but MGM & Epcot will always have to renew themselves with better attractions as technologies, tastes, times change. It is the nature of themeparks.

I don't agree that there is an emminant demise for either the MGM park or for Disney as a whole. There is a new generation of Disney lovers born every year! Keep the faith!

Don't bring Walt Disney into this. I never said he created it. But face it, I don't know if you know this so I will underline it for you very carefully.

Disney is a buisness.

They must please there stockholders.

Although I'm not denying that its not one of the best places in the world, because it is, Disneyworld has people to pay. And sometimes pay means experimention.

Perhaps its just my cynical way of thinking, but meh its my opinon.

Very true, but I believe at the present time that a majority of guests are being satisfied by the Walt Disney company. At least that's the message that I'm getting by knowing that they are expecting record crowds this summer. Sure, there are some parts that may need work, but it's that way at almost all theme parks. I think the majority of people who go to Disney still think that the parks are just as magical as they used to be.
