I have been numerous times in January, and the only time I really see a spike in crowds, is Marathon weekend. We're arriving on the 29th of this month, so I'm hoping for low crowds and warm weather! But the crowds are usually pretty low. Its after the marathon and holidays, but before schools let out for February vacation (which is the 3rd week of Feb here in Mass).
Also, pack some warmer clothes, too. The temps in January can change day to day (I have seen it 80 one day, 55 the next). So bring pants, a jacket maybe, or a sweatshirt. I usually just buy a sweatshirt when I get there, as I love to get one every time I go.

I think crowds will be low all around. I've got a friend who just booked a trip for the first week in February- I'm helping him book dining and I've never seen so many last minute hard to get ressies...both times and locations. So, if dining avail. is any sign- I think you'll be just fine.
