Hello!

I am an avid Disney goer, but I have never stayed at the Swan or Dolphin. Planning on going in August for 4 nights, and I am torn between staying where I am familiar (Wilderness) or trying something new (Swan/Dolphin).

Can someone give me some pros or cons for Swan/Dolphin? Thanks!

Wife and I are big fans of Swan/Dolphin. By far the biggest pro is being able to walk/boat ride to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. You also get to enjoy the atmosphere/nightlife of the Boardwalk Resort. There's also tons of good restaurants in walking distance and lots of variety to choose from. The resorts are owned by Starwood (now Marriott) so if you have SPG or Marriott reward points, you can use them for free nights at either hotel.

As far as cons go, they do charge a daily resort and daily parking fee (if you have a vehicle and park it in their lot). Sure, it's annoying, but at the end of the day I'm still saving money compared to the rate I would have paid staying at the Yacht, Beach or Boardwalk Resorts.

Wilderness Lodge is a fantastic and beautiful resort. As far as choosing between Wilderness and Swan/Dolphin, I think it depends on where you plan on spending the majority of your time. If it's Epcot/Hollywood Studios, then I say definitely Swan/Dolphin, but if it's MK, I say stick with what you know.

Thank you!! We usually spend the majority of the time at Epcot, so that's great you can walk there from Swan/Dolphin!

I think you have a great location then. I love Epcot and outside of our DVC stays, the vast majority in more recent years have been at the Swan. I personally prefer the Swan to the Dolphin but others in my family do the Dolphin more than the Swan. I like the smaller resort of the Swan but the better food options are at the Dolphin.

I truly wish they would just roll the resort fee into the room cost as I dislike paying extra for that, especially now that I cannot seem to get that fee waived. If that's my only complaint, you know it's not a bad place to be then. I truly think it's the best place for us if we are doing a non-DVC stay.

We've been to S/D twice and after a 10 year WDW absence we're going back in January, and S/D was our choice due to it's close proximity to Epcot & DHS. In the past we thoroughly enjoyed taking the Monorail back to Epcot and walking through to get to the S/D about the only time we needed to take a bus was for AK. Over the years we've stayed using points or points & cash at S/D, but this year we booked through Costco Travel. Either way you're in WDW so its hard to beat. As for the resort fee it's a bit of the norm for the larger hotels, I just roll that price into the per night charge and compare based on that. To me it's not a deal breaker.

The best thing about the Swan and Dolphin is location. And the bus service to Epcot and The Disney Studios. To me, they do lack a bit of the Disney charm. But you never know until you try, right?

We have had great experiences at Swan and Dolphin however I would agree with anyone stating that it does lack a bit of the Disney charm. If you are used to always staying at Wilderness Lodge it will be a different (not necessarily bad) experience. However the room is spacious and comfortable and you can't beat the location. One other thing to keep in mind is no Magical Express.

Here is a good post on what you do and do not get at the Swan/Dolphin. Not mentioned is that you cannot get the Disney Dining Plan if you stay at the S&D.

So, some background on the Swan and Dolphin: The Swolphin both is and isn't a Disney hotel. Basically, Disney is letting an outside hotel chain run a Disney resort rather than run it themselves. They did this to attract conventioneers who were used to hotel chains and had points with them (originally Westin and Sheraton, both bought out by Starwood, which is now bought out by Marriott).

It is a Disney resort:

* Disney advertises the Swolphin as a Disney resort on their site and it shows up in resort searches.
* Disney has a say in how they operate.
* Disney characters show up for their character meals.
* Disney gets a share of their earnings.
* Disney provides free transportation within 'the bubble' (buses and ferries, but not Magical Express to/from the airport).
* Disney staffs their Disney ticket center.
* If you stay at the Swolphin, parking is free at the parks (but not at the Swolphin itself).
* You get Extended Magic Hours
* You get the 60 day window for FastPasses.
* Park purchases can be sent to the Swolphin for pick-up later.
* You get all the golfing perks of staying at a Disney Resort

It is not fully Disney:

* You can use Starwood/Marriott points there, which you can't at other Disney resorts.
* The accounting system is separate which means you can't charge to room at the parks.
* They don't do MagicBands (no free ones, no MB door unlocking, but, you can buy your own or use old ones from other visits).
* They charge for parking at the Swolphin (other Disney resorts don't charge for parking at the resort).
* They have a mandatory resort fee (unless you bought a package deal, like from CostCo, in which the resort fee is waived or included).
* You don't have Magic Express to/from the airport (but you do have free bus and ferry within the Disney bubble).

As a convention resort, the clientele is more adults and less children. Occasionally, the lobby will be full of conventioneers moving to their next event. And it's cheaper than the other resorts on Crescent Lake (the lake between Epcot and Hollywood Studios). Often $200 a night or more cheaper.

It is very much a Deluxe resort. It has high class restaurants and shops. Excellent pools. A spa. Character dining. A gym. Children's activity center. Full room service. Full business class services. People argue over whether it's appropriately themed enough to be a Deluxe. While you're not going to get a bed shaped like a pirate ship, it's as nice as the Contemporary or Yacht, Beach, Boardwalk, or Floridian whose theming is nothing more than fine architecture and art. And the Swolphin has that, though, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And, you can walk to two parks. I love that. And you can walk to any of the fine restaurants/bars of the other resorts on the lake including the BoardWalk.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose the Dolphin over the Swan. Mostly because most of the amenities (completely shared by the two... same owner) are in the Dolphin: gym, laundromat, all-night cafeteria, ice cream shop, grab & go food store (Fuel). The Swan is just slightly more luxe than the Dolphin, but, I'd rather not carry laundry to another building.

I have stayed at both the Disney Dolphin and Swan. They are both great hotels in a great location. The value is good, especially if you can use SPG rewards points for your stay.

I've stayed at both. I lean toward the wilderness it's more my style. The swan is nice and cheaper but it's a different environment. More of a corporate event type hotel. When I was there there were many corporate meeting types there attending various conferences. It kind of lost the vacation feel. The wilderness is just warm and immersive, I love the place and now with the addition of the geyser point location it's just great to just sit and watch the water. So WL would be my choice. If you just want an new experience then give it a try you won't be dissapointed.
