Wilderness Lodge v. Port Orleans FQ

Right now my family and I have reservations at POFQ from Dec. 31-Jan 6. Should we upgrade to Wilderness Lodge? We've never stayed there before, however we have stayed at Fort Wilderness. Are there any pros/cons to staying at Wilderness Lodge? We LOVED Animal Kingdom Lodge (but they're booked).. any resemblance to that?

I love both resorts...but keep in mind you are trying to compare a deluxe resort (WL) with a moderate resort (POFQ).

If you have the extra $$ I would go for WL. First you have location...a wonderful boat ride away from the MK. Incredible theming, it is as beautiful or IMHO more beautiful than AKL. I think the Christmas decorations will still be up and the are great. Very nice pool, but it may be a bit cold at that time of year, but you always have the hot tubs!
Also there is no comparison to food choices between WL & POFQ. WL has Artist Point, one of Disney's best and the fun of Whispering Canyon, where POFQ only has the food court.

Have a great time. :xmas:

We have stayed at both and as much as I love Port Orleans (both POFQ and POR), WL is a much nicer experience. Main reasons being location and beefed up themeing. You will still take a bus to most parks but the boat to the MK is special.

Either way they are both excellent resorts. We are staying at the WL for our second time in January and had we not gotten AP discount there was a chance we would have to drop down and in which case it would have been POR. We are still going to head over there though for the boat to Downtown Disney just because we love it so much.

Love them both!

Our two favorite places to stay are WL and POFQ, great experiences at both. One tip to remember is that the WL bus usually goes to Fort Wilderness Campground after pickup, even if it is the MK bus, and goes to FW Campground first on return goes there first. The ferry boat to MK is great, but takes a long time because it also goes to the campground after pickup. But you can take the ferry directly to the Contemporary and walk or take the monorail from there. SO even though WL is closer to MK, we have found the bus transport more direct from POFQ. Can't beat the lobby of the WL, and for a quick eat, Roarin Forks is almost as convenient as the food court at POFQ. We have always preferred WL in winter though...that fireplace is just too cozy to resist. Have fun!

POFQ or Wilderness Lodge?

I have never stayed at Wilderness Lodge, but having visited some of the deluxe resorts, it would probably be a better bet than French Quarter, if you don't mind spending the extra cash. For our purposes, POFQ is just fine.

Checking into POFQ Tomorrow, Nov. 23, 2006!:xmas:

I second that comment.

But truly they should not be compared. One is a moderate, one is a Deluxe.

Since one is moderate, and one is Delux, how are the rooms in comparison? And the bathrooms? I remember staying at POFQ and not having much sink space, and my mom and I have a lot of hair products, etc. Also, we like how the shower and toilet is seperate from the "getting ready" area. Is that how it is at WL?

We're a family of 4--Ages= 40, 38, 17, 5...

Thanks!!

I have never stayed at POFQ, so I do not know about the room size. We have stayed only in the honeymoone suites at WL and the Villas at WL Studio. My guess is that the room size is going to be comparable. I think what really makes a resort a Deluxe vs a moderate is the intensity of the themeing and the relative location to the parks. For example, all resorts on seven sees lagoon and bay lake are Deluxe due to their relative close proximaty to the MK, the monorail, and boat transportation. They are also very heavily themed. They also have amenities that other moderat resorts do not have. (Spa's, etc.) Thats just my opinion/best guess, but others who may be more knowlegable may have a different angle.

 Yes, the sink is separate from the toilet area at WL. we love the Lodge. Its so beautiful. we love POR too. never stayed at FQ. both resorts have boat rides. FQ to DTD and WL to MK. the fireplace in the lobby of WL is too cool for words, though. so is the Whispering Canyon Cafe. I dont think that FQ has a sitdown restaurant. I think you have to go over to POR. Either way, have a magical trip. Our next trip coming right up.....16 days. woo hoo!!!!!:xmas: :sohappy:

If you are going to stay at POFQ and are worried about costs, for the over all experience the PoRS is a nicer themed resort for the same price.:animwink:

Thanks for all the suggestions and information everyone!!

I don't think cost matters too much as this is mine & my brothers Christmas present. We wanted the Contemporary since we've had good experiences there before, but it is booked. I'll let my parents read over what you guys responded so they can make their decision.

Thanks again!

:sohappy: we have stayed at both resorts and enjoyed both.we just returned from our stay and let me tell you the best trip ever.at the WL we felt more pampered and relaxed, pofq is nice but does not compare to WL. you are totally imeresed in the themeing and the staff seemed to be more willing to interact with the guest.we are even now joining dvc so we can stay at the villas every trip and we go every year. in short if money is not a concern go with the WL. KUNGALOOSH!!!!:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

The bathrooms are set up similar with the sinks seperate from the tub and toilet but there are a few differences. One is the sink area is not visible from the bedroom area so there is a little more privacy by the sinks but if somebody walked around you would be visible as it is not a closed off sink area. I can't remember if there are 2 sinks or 1 at the WL but there was a long counter vs. the pedestal sinks at POFQ so there is room for your stuff. Not a lot but more than at POFQ.

Animal Kingdom Lodge was done by same architect (sp?) as the Wilderness Lodge. You will see similarites.
If money is not a question, then there is no question. You need to head to the Wilderness Lodge. It's the best spot on property with the possible exception of Grand Floridian (which is even more expensive).
Go to Wilderness Lodge and you'll probably never go anywhere else.
