Wilderness Lodge Question...

Starting to think about a 2011 trip and a stay for the first time at WL. We have two boys and the bunk beds would work out great. I noticed a interesting statement on allears WL fact sheet:

"The Wilderness Lodge no longer accepts requests for bunk bed rooms."

This doesn't seem right considering there are actually different rates for bunk bed rooms. Did they ever have just one rate for say a standard room and you could request a bunk bed in lieu of 2 queens?

Yes, at one time you would book by view only and request a bunk bed. I am glad they changed it. Unfortunately, they now charge extra for a bunk bed room where when it was a request, they didn't.

We were in a similar position, needing bunk beds, which are only available at AKL and WL and were shocked at the extra cost. Does anyone have any explanation for this? It seems unreasonable to me

Supply and demand. The bunk bed rooms were in high demand, and people are willing to pay in order to get them. No use in giving something up for free when you have a captive audience that is willing to pay.

I think they did have a standard rate in the past. Disney has gradually been adding charges to rooms/views/dates that didn't exist in the past.

I would read the note simply that they don't take it as a room request, but rather a separate category. A request is something like a certain building, first floor, near the elevator, or an end room. Stuff like that.

You should definitely spring for them though! We have done the bunk bed rooms twice, and our kids (5 and 2) LOVE them. And if you request the highest floor possible (6th w/o concierge) you can see the fireworks in the woods view rooms. At least we could.

Most definitely, we stayed at AKL in the past with the bunks and the kids loved them. We would be hard pressed to pass on them for our WL trip. Thanks for the "highest floor possible" information, good to know. It's like DisneyInsider said "supply and demand" and I think the demand is pretty strong.

Sorry for the delay in responding, thanks to all.

"Because they can." That sums up most questions regarding pricing and Disney.

I will also state this -- we stayed at the WL in August of 2006, back when bunk beds were a "request" and not an additional charge. One afternoon while heading to lunch we made our way down the hallway and noted one room open and two maintenance guys putting together one of the bunk beds. When we got back from lunch, they were just finishing up. It took two guys around an hour to put together this bed. Two guys at how much per hour, when they should probably be doing something else more "mainenance" related.

Now you also have to figure that the lawyers will insist any bunk bed will be anchored into the adjoing wall to prevent little Timmy - aka, Tarzan from being able to tip the bed over, no matter how inattentive the parent. As such, I'd think it not unreasonable to expect these rooms to come at a higher price-point as there's more work involved for everyone - the folks who put the room together, the folks who have to make the beds, etc.... or just use "because they can" for your answer.
