Why was Figment the Dragon created?

Figment is a small purple dragon that wears a yellow sweater. In 1983 he started appearing in Jouney into Imagination with his buddy Dreamfinder. In 1999 to 2002 Figment left the attraction. The lovable character changed his name to Figment Manning and started a career in professional football joining the New York Giants as a backup to quarterback Kerry Collins. In Jan of 2001 the Giants lost the super bowl to the Baltimore Ravens and Figment became so distraught that he decided to return to Disney World and team up with Dr. Nigel Channing to once again be the most awesome character in all of Epcot.

On a side note Dreamfinder had a short career as a mall Santa and is now living in Tampa awaiting the day Disney wakes up and realizes that he is way better then Nigel Channing…

Apparently we caught the original ride in soft opening. We were at Epcot Center in late October of 1982 and rode the ride with Dreamfinder and Figment. I know it was open in late October, at least on some basis.

I remember hearing that Kodak wanted a special character to represent the attraction they agreed to sponsor. So Disney began to think of a magical creature that came out of your imagination incorporating different things (a goat, a dragon, etc...). Thus, Figment was born.

Just a note in addition to the above - Figment (and Dreamfinder) were created especially for Journey into Imagination (the pavilion) - NOT the 1999 mess that was the Imagination Institute

Just had to correct that :D

And i for one thank you for clarifying that VERY important fact!

:sohappy:

Yes folks...Figment was around Looonnggg before the silly "Institute" concept came into being.

One of the imagineers (Tony Baxter, I believe, but I'm not certain) saw an episode of an 80s TV show (I believe it was Magnum PI), where someone referred to something being a "Figment of your Imagination"... so he started wondering what such a figment would look like.

There's also been talk in the past that his coloring had to do with the pavilion sponsor (Kodak). Very early renditions of him showed him being green, but (depending on whom you believe), that may have been a little to "Fuji" for Kodak, so he's now purple with a Kodak yellow/red sweater.

I read the same thing about Magnum PI, and there was a line about "figment of your imagination" that sparked the original idea. It was in the Disney World Trivia Book. I can't remember if it's in book 1 or 2, but I thought it was a bit interesting when I read it.

I love Figment, this is great thread for figment fans to read. :)

Here is me with Fig-zilla! Just so you know he has closed up his home, he no longer has a photo spot....as of now.
