Why the paltry selection of TV at Deluxe Resorts

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if any of the cast or crew can tell me why the selection of television stations in the resorts is so limited. I enjoy Disney channel and its various siblings but I would really like to at least see some of the extended basic cable stations that I recieve at home. I.E. Turner Classic, AMC, etc. Even Motel 6 gives you HBO.... How about at least Starz or Encore? I visit the World several times a year and since I don't spend every moment in the parks I like to sometimes spend a quite hour or two in the room.

Anyone else feel this way or am I being unreasonable?

We don't really watch tv when we're at WDW...the kids just turn it on for info while we are getting dressed.

Welcome to Disney resort TV. IMO that is the single WORST thing about staying on property. You get, 5 DIsney Channels, 4 ESPN's, local channels, an infomercial for that awesome appliance place, and a couple german channels. LOL

If they had HBO, Encore, Starz, etc....they may include curses which isn't very Disney like...

But I too dislike the channels....

How about inocuous channels like TLC, HGTV, Food Network

Because they don't want you in the room. They want you at the parks, restaurants and stores spending money.....Which is fine with me. The last thing I worry about when I am at WDW is watching TV:)

Sorry Spectroman, didn't realize you already said the same thing as me....Great minds think alike!

Aside from the local station and the weather channel, these are pretty much all channels that Disney owns in some way. The others are their direct competition. Why advertise for them to a large group of people?

I mean, i'd like to be able to watch the Cartoon Network at WDW, but i'm willing to give it up since there's so much else that comes with a Disney room.

Also, those channels involve pseudo- late at night, so perhaps Disney doesn't want that being piped into their rooms. Most hotels let you order to make money, Disney wont.

Is it possible that Disney would have to shell out some sort of licencing fee like any other cable system to carry those other stations?

Probably why they carry mostly Disney owned cable stations.

TV, Shmeevee. For 25 bucks, you can buy a DVD player smaller than many hardcover books, and you can plug it into the front inputs of the TVs in most of the rooms. For less than 100 bucks, you can buy a portable DVD player with its own screen, and that's if you don't have a laptop with a drive. And of course, home away from home resorts have DVD players in the 1BR, 2BR and grand villas. Pack your favorite movies or bring along a season of your favorite shows on DVD, and this way, IF you find yourself in your room for a prolonged period of time, you're set with entertainment on your schedule.

And of course, there are ipods, Zen Vision: Ms and other MP3 players that have video capabilities. You can plug those into your TV, too.

i spend very little time in the room during the day but there is an hour or two at night after the kids go to sleep that i would like to watch alittle tv too. A little more variety would be nice, doen't even need to be a movie channel just something different

Couldn't be happier...

Well I couldn't be happier with the 25 different ESPN channels available, heck I've learned spanish watching ESPN Deportes. The wife however agrees with most of you, she needs a few more channels for the downtime in the room. Why can't women just learn to love, not just like, ESPN. I'm hoping if there ever is a fifth gate it will be ESPNworld or ESPN Kingdom or even ESPN Studios, maybe ESPNCOT.
