Why not do what Universal does?

Then stay at a Universal Resort instead. Cheaper than Disney Resorts and Express is included.
We spend way more time at Disney than Universal and I am not one to resort hop, and besides my main focus at Universal is Harry Potter so I will just happily go stand in line with the masses. I just don't get why Universal charges anyone, Disney doesn't, not even for offsite guests.

You're right that Disney doesn't charge, but then again they don't offer what Universal offers. If Disney ever implemented a system where you could get passes to almost every ride in the park, I'm willing to bet that they would charge for that.

Express works very differently from Fastpass. And if you can afford it, Express is a much more useful and convenient system than Fastpass. They charge because everyone having Express would defeat its purpose entirely. Its circulation needs to be limited for it to be effective.

I see a day when Disney does away with the stand by line and you pick out all of your rides for the day. No fast pass. They know how many people can go through the ride each hour and would allow that many people reserve a time each hour.
Or
No fast passes at all. Unless you stay on site and pay a premium for fast passes. Disney is seeing how much they can get away with at these special events that people pay money for , then turn around and want to have them pay extra for a cupcake party or a special seat for a parade.

I'm on vacation with the boyfriend's family right now and we just finished two days at Universal. This was the first time I had ever had the express pass but gosh was it worth the extra price. I never had to worry about getting in what I wanted to, or had to stick to specific time slots, and I don't think I ever had to wait more than 20 minutes for anything. I'm sure everything will seem much longer now that we're at Disney XD

That being said, I hope Disney keeps doing rides the way it does rides. While the new rides at Universal are fun and certainly cool, they're so focused on using the 3D screens that it makes it hard for people with motion sickness (like my boyfriend, who only has issues with the simulated movement like on Spider-Man and Forbidden Journey) to enjoy the rides as well. My mother also is a huge thrill ride fan and recently developed issues with vertigo so it is the same way with her. Universal does thrill well, but after going on so many rides they're all just a bit too similar for my taste.
