Why is Roy Last Family Member?

This may be a stupid question to some of you, but all of the news reports I've read say that Roy is the last member of the Disney family active in the company. What about Walt's children and grandchildren? I'm pretty sure Walt had two daughters. Why aren't their families saying anything during any of this? Did they just take the money and run?

I am not sure exactly how true this is but from all of the postings I have read, Roy resigned at one other time also. He apparently didnt like the current CEO at that time and sought out a new CEO. He found Michael Eisner. The CEO that stepped down/ resigned/ retired/ whichever?? Ron Miller, Diane Disney's husband, Walt's son in law!!! I know they have 5 children the youngest who is Walt's namesake ( and a really cute guy!) I Am sure Sharon has some children also as well as Roy O. Disney's children & their children!!! I think it is important to keep a Disney family member on the board specifically to carry on Walt's traditions and way of thinking. That is what sets Disney apart from everything else out there!! It would be nice to have a Disney at CEO once again...I wonder if it will ever happen...

I am not sure if a CEO would be an appropriate title specifically, but Disney has a family tradition that is pretty unique to their lines of business. Everyone sees WDW as Uncle Walt guiding you through the wishes and dreams of America. No other theme park has that type of cache. I do however think that this ideal should DEFINTELY be represented on the Board of Directors, but I Am not sure if CEO would be the appropriate place for it. Any thoughts from the more business minded souls out there? Belle

No, but I think it could be possible if one of the Disneys was business minded and willing to take a company position...I mean the title and job of CEO isn't handed just to anybody...the member of the Disney family should be in the circle, so to speak, for a long time before that happens...I just wonder why none of Walt's grandkids have taken any interest in the company?? Or have they? I'm really not that familiar with the Disney family members....

I agree with you. As of the last time I did the One Man's Dream tour I had asked if any of the Disney children were involved in the company and was told no. Walter Elias Disney Miller ( Ron Miller's son) is on a DVD about Walt and is a cutie to boot, but I dont think any of the otehr children have shown any interest. Belle

Eisner was brought on by a commitee headed up by Roy. Miller was in charge during that time in the 80's and it was decided that he could not run the company. So they looked outside the family for the first time ever. Now it seems like the family is out of the company for good.

The company was out of the family's hands the moment Sid Bass took control and helped Roy choose Eisner.

Walt's family, with the exception of Ron Miller and Roy Disney, wants nothing to do with the company. they have been that way since his death. I think that the only members still WILLING is Ron Miller and Roy should the chance arise which i higly doubt will happen.

Eisner and Wells, actually. In retrospect, a very important distinction.

I don't think anyone from the Disney family is in a position to take over the Disney company.

That doesn't mean it can't be run in the Disney tradition.

As good as it may be to have a family member to be in control of some things at the company to keep the mission and values of the Disney name alive, I really don't think the family should hold any responsibilities for the company, just because of their relations. I mean, I'm sure they all want to see Walt's legacy live on, but for them to just go in and take over, well, that's a lot to lay on a family like that. If I was born into a family like that, and my parents passed away and everyone was like "ok, now its your job to keep things running smoothly around here", instead of going off to fulfill my own dreams, that would be quite a burden....

Disney Chairman Ron Miller was ousted in the famous 1984 takeover that spawned the Roy Disney-Eisner-Katzenberg era. Today, Miller and his family own Silverado Vineyards in Napa Valley and make a nice chardonnay.

Ron Miller is still around. he doesnt have anything to do with Disney anymore though.

Back in i believe it was 84, Roy left the board to try to help Ron take over the company in a hostle takeover but after it didnt work Roy went back to the company and Ron dropped out of the headlines.

Not sure what he is doing now, i am sure its on the net somewhere. Ron and Roy were the only family members that cared about the company after Walt's death. His other children did not want the burden of running it. Its not like the Walton family and Wal-Mart where the entire family is involved.

It's a family owned business, it needs to stay in the family for generations to generations. Well since it's not family owned either, it's not quite the family place, and people friendly...If you know what I mean?;)

Hey that is absolutely true!!! Does this mean that Disney drives people to drink?  Any idea on what career paths any of the children took? Also do Roy's Family and Diane & Sharon's families socialize considering the past business dealings between the families? I cant imagine that would make for a happy go lucky Christmas dinner table!!! Belle

Disney drives people to be happy and i guess being happy for some involves a bottle of Fess Parker 100 years of Magic Special Edition merlot. LOL, well i know Walts daughter wrote a book but i am not sure on his other kids.

Since this is the rumor section, Roy (allegedly) has or had a drinking problem. :slurp:
