Why is it called Walt Disney World and...

It is WallyWorld and not Wally's World.

If it was Disney's World it would be just his. Since it is DisneyWorld it is for everyone (who can afford it.)

Tampabrad I think has it right! I think it was called Walt Disney World or even Disney World, because it belongs to everyone! Kind of like in the immortal words immortalized in Town Square...

"...to all who come to this place..."

I really believe that Walt wanted this property to 'belong' to the people who visited it, in a sense!

So I wanted to add my monies worth on the subject...Thanks for listening!

Good point! In fact, on the DL dedication plaque, Walt literally said, "Disneyland is YOUR land".

People hardly ever call it by it's proper name of WDW anymore...even the webite is Disneyworld.com...it ruins the intention of keeping "Walt" in the title. I asked one of my students if she had ever been to Walt Disney World, and she told me "I've never been to WALT Disney World but I've been to Disneyworld...."

To maybe shed some different color light on this post...

When Walt was planning the Florida property, he wanted it called Disney World or Disneyworld. But after Walt passed on Dec 5, 1965, Roy came out of retirement to finish Walt's DREAM! and thought it fitting to include WALT in the name as a trubute to his brother and his vision and direction.
NOW, as for the website, the site is not to be a tribute to Walt or his vision and direction. If it were to be a tribute as that, then yes, the site would have be called waltdisneyworld.com and reflected on the life and times of a boy from Chicago and his jouney into fame! BUT, the site as it stands today is the place where you can make reservations, buy tickets, etc. and saying disneyworld.com is just the way to honor the place that WALT created to go to!

I hope this makes sense and sheds a different color light on the subject!

 Thanks for listening!

 Nope, didn't sound "dumb" at all. I actually thought it was probably the best post in this thread.

Although while we're on the topic, I did catch one minor error in your last post. You wrote that Walt passed on December 5, 1965. You were actually off by one year. He died in 1966. You seem to know your stuff, so I figured it was just a typo.

The original name was proposed by Walt Disney and was supposed to just be called Disney World. I guess it went along with Disneyland (not Disney's Land), but added to the size and grandiose of what the Florida resort was going to be. When Walt died, Roy and crew decided to add "Walt" infront of the name as a tribute to his ideas.

EDIT: forgot to read page 2: To add onto what some people are saying, yes Disneyland was kind of a gift to everyone past, present, and future. The plaque says that it is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America and it was Disney's way of showcasing American history and dreams to everyone. It was also a gift to everyone who had families, including his own, who wanted a place where they parents and children could have fun together, unlike the amusement parks of the day that were not the most family friend atmospheres, and also unlike parks and playground where parents observed while their kids enjoyed the activities.

So to name WDW Walt Disney's World would go against one of his main philosophies of giving to and entertaining everyone I guess!

I just say that Walt had passed away, so technically it couldn't have been his world unless he was living, so it was named WDW as tribute to him.

Maybe it was done out of thoughfulness for others.

While it might have been Walt Disney's IDEA to build the parks, he had to have many people and stockholders invest their money to make it a reality. It also took many talented and creative minds to make it happen.

By calling it Walt Disney's World, he would be giving the impression that it was he alone, who had all the ideas, all the money, and had it built on his own, his way.

Calling the parks Walt Disney World only implies that it was Walt's IDEA to build the parks thus eliminating any thoughts that he was selfish and taking the credit for everything.

Just my thoughts

With the way they've already shortened EPCOT Center down to Epcot, think of how fast that 's would have been dropped in everyday communication. Heck, around here we shorten everything down to acronyms and initials as it is... We, as fans, would have already just begun referring to it as Walt Disney World minus the 's by now!
