Why I struggle choosing a resort

Sometimes these boards are very helpful. Sometimes they make it harder to decide where to stay! These aren't my opinions, but opinions I read about these resorts all the time.

Grand Floridian- Stuffy, rooms need refurbished, over-priced, construction

Polynesian- Old, falling apart, rooms need refurbished, uncomfortable beds, crowded

Contemporary- Sterile theme, not worth it without theme park view, too many conventions, poor customer service

Bay Lake Tower- studios on the small side, shares amenities with contemporary, theme is boring

Animal Kingdom Lodge- Very remote, dark, long bus rides, only worth it for savannah views

Kidani/Jambo- see AKL

Wilderness Lodge- Too woodsy, rooms a little small and need refurbished

Saratoga Springs- worst theme of all resorts, too far from everything,

Old Key West- A bit remote. Long walks to rooms. Ugly bedspreads. Lack of entertainment and dining options

Beach Club- Far from magic kingdom, bus shared with too many other resorts, rooms just ok

Yacht Club- Too many rooms with less than stellar views, bus issues, hard to watch your children at storm along bay

Boardwalk Inn- Lack of counter service options, long hallways, scary clown pool, noisy at night

All-Stars- Share bus, small rooms, loud children everywhere, motel style lay-out

Pop Century- long walks to rooms, rooms lacking, noisy

Art of Animation- Pricey for the suites, theme too cartoonish for adults, no hot tubs, mixed reviews on counter service, bus service issues, vegetation needs to mature

Coronado Springs- Too many conventions, not centrally located, rooms lack interesting "Disney" theme, very spread out, theme isn't as appealing as other resorts

Caribbean Beach- way too spread out, rooms sometimes not clean, huge cheerleading groups

Port Orleans Riverside- Very large resort. Theme and location a little "plain". Lacks Disney excitement. Rooms small for a families. Pools just ok

Port Orleans French Quarter- Creepy decorations all over the place. Long walk to amenities at the riverside.

Shades of Green- Lack of an interesting theme, military only

Fort Wilderness- Unless camping is exciting for you, this has little appeal, and is secluded and is not what most people want from a Disney vacation.

Off-site- It's not in disney and therefore could never be as magical, wonderful, or provide an escape from the real world like a Disney resort. No extra magic hours, magical express, package delivery, 180+10 ADRs, key to the world card for charging to room

Gotta slightly take issue with a few of the opinions (I know they're not yours):

Polynesian- Old, falling apart, rooms need refurbished, uncomfortable beds, crowded - - -- - They've been refurbished within the past few years. They're hardly falling apart and the beds are actually quite comfortable.

Wilderness Lodge- Too woodsy, rooms a little small and need refurbished - - - - - - Is "woodsy" supposed to be a knock on the resort that's based on the Old Northwest Woods lodges? Rooms are typical size, not too small and not too large and they too were refurbished in recent years.

Both of these resorts, which I've stayed in multiple times, are terrific. The only difference to us as to which we choose to stay is how much $ is an issue, WL being the less expensive, but still terrific option.

Has anyone here stayed at Art of Animation? I was pretty excited about a new budget resort, but when it came to booking our trip for June, to be honest, I just didn't like the way it looked. It seems so busy and almost has a 70's look to it (to me). We ended up choosing POR. I'd like to hear from those who have stayed there.

It is my dream to stay at Wilderness Lodge. It's a little pricey, but it's so close to MK and looks beautiful to me!

If you want to go offsite, you'll get a much nicer room (for less money!) than you would on the Disney property. Some people really like to stay on WDW property and i get that! I was that person. :) Nothing wrong with staying on disney property and there are some perks to it. Once I finally ventured off the Disney property, though, I never felt the desire to go back. FWIW.

Good luck with your choice. :)

It's all personal judgment. Those who have a perceived problem at a resort are more vocal than those who do not. And with regard to personal judgment we are complete opposite of the above. Stopped offsite and will always now stay on property. Just personal opinion.

I have to totally agree with the above as @DisneyJunkie stated. I love the Poly and think the beds are fabulous, and booked WL for this year's upcoming vacation. We didn't care for GF, and did stay at the Contemporary, just matter of preference. It really is a matter of opinion, and dollars and cents. I cant say I ever had a bad trip, and never look for the bad, its vacation :)

I don't find that Grand to be stuffy at all! Maybe because I am used to it? I don't know. Some of your complaints (i.e. Polynesian and Saratoga Springs) are totally valid though. I have no idea what people see in those two resorts. I know I'm going to get attack by Poly fans!

I recognize a few of those comments from the resorts where I've stayed, but I'll also say that I have never once left a resort having been disappointed. I have loved every WDW resort in which I've stayed, and have thought each one was worth the expense. No one resort is going to be perfect, and they all have minor "flaws" that some people will point out - particularly if you ask for opinions.

I seriously wouldn't sweat the comments from other people - you can't base your own decisions on what others think because they aren't you. I would be shocked if you end up regretting, or not enjoying, your stay at any of the resorts you're considering - particularly the deluxe options.

I love POFQ!! I would sleep in a shack in Disney with my family and I would still have a good time! Pick a place and try it, I am sure you will love it. I think with what people are saying about the Poly that they may be the right place for you:)

I often wonder if people that say this stuff have ever even been in the resort, or if they just read it in a book and assume that's how it is. The CMs are so welcoming and nice...we felt totally comfortable there.

I am like so close to click on the button to finalize two nights at the grand floridian!! I keep telling myself to save the $550, and then I keep telling myself to just do it. AHHH

I swear.. only the people in this lifetime can choose ANYTHING to complain about.

Ain't nothing wrong with All Stars! Less than 100$ a night. REMEMBER: you aren't going to Disney for the hotels.

I used to not want to go to WL because the whole woodsy thing did nothing for me. Similar to home.

Now that I live in Florida, I really love it over there. So I can kind of see the "woodsy" thing...although the WILDERNESS part of WL would be a tip-off, lol. :)

I agree with the OP. Most of us on this site are a bit OCD when it comes to planning our Disney trips, and having so many reviews available can certainly make it hard to pick a hotel. (I'm having that problem right now in fact as I plan my Jan 2014 trip, I'm thinking Boardwalk which would be a first for my family.) I am sure we all want to have that "perfect vacation" every time we go to Disney, and seeing so many negatives contrasting with the positives does make it a hard choice.

Personally, I think I will have to stay at them all and form my own opinions. ;)

Just in response to what has been said-

I noted in my original post that these aren't my opinions, but these are things I read about the resorts on the boards all the time. I personally am really trying to talk myself into staying at the grand floridian or poly- and yet I see so many negatives when those resorts come up (especially the floridian).

Every single place I've walked into in WDW I feel is picture perfect and beyond amazing. Can't wait to go next month!
It may be what others have said; but if you were to balance it with the positives that have been said on these boards, then you'd have a better and fuller picture. It does seem that you have only pulled out the negative comments.

CBR - Pirate rooms, 'villages'...some are better locations but depends on what you want to be close too; private island; individual pools for each village plus a themed pool; other amenities too.

CSR - 3 sections, personal choice as to which works best for you...I like the Cabanas...buses run in reverse of stops; coffee shop, food court, and restaurant...bar too; beautiful pond to walk or run around; parking is close by your room; health club

POP - colorful, great for kids, 3 pools, lots of theming, Hourglass Lake, walk to AoA; history lesson at the hotel

AoA - kid/family friendly; pools and water play; wonderful food court; small kitchenette; suites

POR - 2 types of buildings; some sleep 5 okay; boat to DtD; favorite rooms...Alligator Bayou

POFQ - small resort; neat slide in pool; playground close to pool; boat ride to DtD; fun food court; some of the best mousekeepers in the business

The All-stars - fun decor, fun pools (where else can you pretend to play baseball with Goofy while swimming); playgrounds; great decor at Christmas (I still want the Volleyball wreath); football field that kids actually play on...lots of kids for your kids to interact with

WL/VWL - our favorite; quiet and woodsy; lots of small animals to see; on the lake; EWP; walk to FW or boat to FW or CR or MK; large pool with a neat slide; two restaurants; one food court; two bars; health club

BWV - kitchenettes and kitchens; the Boardwalk and nighttime entertainment; the walk or run around the lake; walk to 2 parks; boat to 2 parks; near Fantasia mini-golf; the wedding gazebo; surrey bikes; several restaurants; easy boat or walk to 4 other hotels and their restaurants, etc...

These are just the ones that we've actually stayed at...the order:
CBR, CBR, POFQ, POR, POFQ, ASSp, ASMu, POR, ASMo, WL, WL, CSR, WL, CSR, WL, CSR, POP, AoA, WL, BWV, and VWL

Changes over the years...number of kids, castmember discounts, going childless, 2 incomes, no kids at home anymore; POP/AoA - we went with other members of our extended family and all they could or wanted to afford was POP/AoA...family comes first.
