Why Forbidden Journey is So Effective

So I was thinking about the scene in Forbidden Journey with the dragon. You know the one, with the animatronic dragon that breathes steam at you. Every time I go on that ride, I find myself instinctively pressing myself up against the back of my seat. I know I cannot touch the dragon, but I try not to anyway.
And then I realized that in most attractions, you are removed from the action physically by a ride vehicle that kind of shields you from what’s going on. Even in Rise, you know that Kylo cannot hurt you as long as you are buckled into your ride vehicle and keep your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside at all times. But Forbidden Journey throws that all out the window. The set elements get SO CLOSE to you, it constantly feels like they will touch you. I think that without the Kuka system exposing your body (or at least your legs) to so much, the ride wouldn’t be half as good. The sets and animatronics wouldn’t be as awesome if they didn’t feel close. The screens would be even more boring if they didn’t feel like you could kick them.
I’m so excited for monsters as it looks like it will expose you to even more. Frankenstein almost grabbing your feet would be fantastic.

I wish I didn't have to close my eyes on Forbidden so much, it really takes away from the ride. I try to keep my eyes open as much as possible during the non-screen portions but even those can be a bit iffy for my motion sickness.

I really enjoy the ride system. While some of the screens and transitions are a bit clunky to me, it's forgivable given the fact that it was ground-breaking for its time, and I agree that the best parts of the attraction are those where you're thisclose to real, 3D set pieces and effects.

Too bad the ride is not for those that suffer from motion sickness. That one makes my wife throw up every time.

Agreed, the screens have always been the weakest part of Forbidden Journey, and the combination of the insanely cool ride vehicles with how close you get to the physical sets is what makes the ride so great.

Though, the way the screen portions work - a rotating carousel of massive dome screens - is also impressive.

If the rumor are true that the Monsters kuka arm ride will be all physical sets, it should be amazing.

I felt major motion sickness on Hagrid's Motorbike, but felt extremely relaxed on FJ. I loved the ride for the effects but also greatly enjoyed the motion of it because it felt like I was floating and it relaxed me. I could easily do that ride all day.
