Why don't they use the island?

I recall reading an article that mentioned the possibility of turning Discovery Island in Bay Lake into a reproduction of the island on Lost, complete with underground hatch, with the button that has to be pushed every 108 mintes.

*is weak with geeky joy*

But seriously, this brings up two great points;

1. Why aren't they using that island for something? Why are they just letting it sit there and overgrow and run down?

2. Why hasn't Disney built a Lost themed area/ride in WDW or DL? Its a huge show, with MILLIONS of devoted fans that would GLADLY plan a WDW vacation JUST to come see that (amoung other things). Its got amazing ratings, and anything Lost would be huge.

Just imagine it...........

Discovery Island gets turned into 'The Island'. You arrive on a boat to what looks like an airport terminal. You are to fly on Flight 815 from Australia to Orlando, cause everyone is heading for WDW. You board a plane simulator that looks like the interior of Flight 815. You experience the 'crash', and then you start to mingle with the other survivors including people that look and sound just like Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Sayid, Charlie, Desmond, Claire, Sun, Jin, Hurley, and more. After spending time getting to explore the beach, and talk to different people, someone comes running out of the jungle yelling about finding a hatch in the ground. Several of the main characters and all the tourists go to see it......

Then, you get to go down into a exact replica of the hatch, complete with the computer, and the button that has to be pushed every 108 minutes.

Then, you head back up to the beach, only to have The Others show up! You get to meet Ben and Tom (Mr. Friendly), and then just before they KILL YOU, the 'rescue boat' show up, and you get rescued (return to your car/hotel.

Actually I like the idea of creating a pirates island better. Your thoughts were cool but hard to implement for all ages and handicaps. Disney would want an attraction that would be accessable to everyone. Even the pirates theme would create problems for all demographics. Maybe that is why they haven't done anything with the island.

A pirate themed tom sawyer island would be cool, a couple of restaraunts and a ship with some 3d stuff.

That island is not really so big.

When we first started going to WDW, when there was only the MK, they were trying hard to get people to go over there, almost like "Please go see it, please go.".
What they had was a bird show that was not so exciting.
Not like 'Flights of Wonder', which is great.

Later, as the guest population grew at WDW, they started requiring a special ticket to go over there. That seemed funny after their "Please go see it" approach a few years earlier.

Then when AK was being created they closed it down.
Now the birds and gators can enjoy it without being bothered by people.

I doubt that they will ever do anything with the island. Disney had a recent history at letting older things rot or not utililizing space, woders of life, 20k, and the biggest disgrace River Country. So I think that they will do nothing and let the island rot.

I am a HUGE Lost fan. However, I just don't think this would work...
I'm also a huge LOST fan, but I do agree with you. Though, I do think it would be cool to have a restaurant that sells DHARMA Initiative Macaroni and Cheese Dinners and salads with DHARMA Ranch Composite (shelf life: 7 years) on them. Saving the world never tasted so good! :slurp:

I love your Lost island idea, but aside from it being a bird sanctuary now, I just don't think the lost idea (however much I would LOVE to see it happen) would be family friendly enough for Disney.

I do love the plane terminal entrance idea, the simulator is great (kids can skip it), then meeting the characters would be exciting. Maybe instead of a huge scary drama, it can sort of be a trek and you can explore the hatch instead. Then eat some dharma initiative food (how exciting would a food drop be? Oh, now I'm going way out there too....).

(sigh)

They are all such great ideas......

I just cant figure out why DIsney hasnt done ANYTHING in the parks with Lost! Not even a merchandise store! Nothing! No Dharma shirts, no keychains, nothing!

Lost is ABC's hottest show. Why they haven't even put in a simple Lost giftshop is beyond me.

OH and BTW The island is 11 acres. More than enough room to do SOMETHING of substance.

OH! Idea! How cool would a Swan Hatch resturant be! All the characters could walk around and meet people. You could get in line to have a chance to push the button! Too cool.

13 "and more" CMs that "look and act" as the original actors? For an experience that relatively few would go out of their way from visiting the four parks to see? You've got to be kidding! The only way would be to charge a large fee ($200- 300) for the experience- sounds like that Night Kingdom thing .

They do it for other characters! Jack Sparrow, all the princesses.......its not that hard.......LOL

And I, and countless others, would GLADLY pay $200 to spend an hour or two in a highly themed and detailed recreation of the hatch and beach with look alike characters.

ALSO I had a great idea for a possible Dharma resturant; place the resturant slightly under the ground level, then have an elevator that makes it seem like you are decending down several stories under the ground. Outside the windows in the elevator, you could have simulated ground and such passing by to make it seem like you are decending several stories underground!

*drools with desire*

I agree that Disney should do something with Lost, but I am not sure what they could exactly do with it. There isn't much they could do with it because the island is basically the setting for the entire show. I don't think that they will recreate the island, when they have basically the same thing over at Tom Sawyers Island... So what they could do, I'm not sure. I do like your idea on selling Lost attire though. But they should have an entire ABC store.

now forgive me if i'm wrong, but wasn't discovery island a pirate island initially.... or was that the intial idea. i believe it was just an island to walk around on but people found it boring because of the lack of things to do so they added animals.

I'd really like to see it used again for something. It is one of the few things I actually remember about my first trip to the World in 1980.

And my family actually saved something from it:

The gift shop outside the Backlot Tour in DHS had Lost shirts in the past. I bought a Driveshaft World Tour shirt and everytime I wear it, someone comes up and asks if it's the band from the show (the only Lost logo is on a sleeve and it's fairly small).

I love that!

A little piece of WDW/Watercraft trivia: the dock between the ferrryboat dock and GF/Poly dock is still called World Cruise dock even though it's namesake, the World Cruise to Discovery Island and Bay Lake is no longer operational. From World Cruise, you can either go to Wilderness Lodge and Ft. Wilderness.

I wish I was driving on Bay Lake right now....:(

A LOST walkthrough or exhibit somewhere on the Backlot Tour at DHS would be neat. Only problem is by the time anything got finished, the series would be about over. :(

Maybe a new LOST series is in the works ... :lookaroun
