Why Doesn't Moracco or Norway light up for Illuminations?

What?!

What does symmetry possibly have to do with those two not lighting. You really have to be paying attention to even notice that they don't. I know the WDI are really into details but that is a little funny! :ROFLOL: I assure you it's because they are both replicas of a place of worship. I was thinking about it earlier and checked out a few trivia books and I found three that all say the same thing.

WHO knows lets ask the Mouse, he doesn't say much but I'm sure he knows the answer! :lookaroun:hammer:

Hidden Treasures tour guide confirmed Morocco is not lit because of religious reasons. That structure is so authentic, actuall Moroccans (sp?)/people who build the real structures were brought to Florida to complete the majority of the external work.

As for Norway, I have heard it is because the actual country of Norway did not want to take part in the lighting as I believe there is monetary consideration given from each country to be included. This is totally speculation and an unconfirmed rumor.

Morocco doesn't light up because the main "building" is a replica of the Katoubia Minaret (prayer tower) from Marrakesh. Because of its important religious significance, it is not lit up during IllumiNations (to light it up would, in fact, be demeaning).
I know several other posters are backing this up, but it doesn't ring true for me. If the building is really considered to be a mosque in someway, shape, or form, then they wouldn't allow people inside with shoes on. And the belly dancing in the restaurant isn't exactly going to please Islamic sensibilities. Plus, surely all the buildings in the facade aren't religious, right? So why couldn't some of them be lit up? This just sounds like a story someone cooked up a long time ago to explain a situation--the World Showcase version of the Haunted Mansion ring, if you will.

Wow, I never would of guessed that it was because of religious reasons. But...I never even noticed it before that they didn't light up.

(By the way, I'm new here and a big fan of WDW! Glad to be here!)

Morocco is the most authentic of all the pavillions, as moroccans were brought to Epcot to build it. I can not remember the exact details, but if you take a WSC Treasures tour, they will explain it to you in full. It´s very interesting. It´s not lit for religious reasons - the moroccans didn´t accept it. Period -please just accept that because it is the truth!! Traditions tells it and WSC Treasures too, so I take it as a fact.

About Norway, I can´t remember what I learned in my training! :brick: ... but I will be back with the answer from my norwegians friends tomorrow! :animwink:

The UK was not part of the original shows, but later was added (much later)
I believe they were left out for the "ran out of money" excuse.

i'm pretty sure i have or had a copy of wdw news, a paper that was in orlando sentinel & given away at guest relations until early 90's that has an article with pics of illuminations premiere. i'm pretty sure it shows uk all lit up.

The prayer tower is where the daily calls to prayer are issued from, though certainly not a mosque (the real one in Marrakesh is part of a mosque, but this one isn't). All I know is that the Moroccan government (who paid for construction, etc.) requested that the tower (and I presume the rest of the pavillion) not be lit up out of respect, and that's good enough for me :)

it was money. they also had spent a lot of money to get it what was there to do what they wanted to for RoE, nevermind put in a whole new country. The guy that co-produced the show actually lectured about RoE and if he were to make a BS story, i think he would do better that saying they just ran out of money. If anybody's word is correct, i think i'd belive him. it's like calling an artist wrong about a painting that he made. ridiculous.

Actually, when Norway was being built, Denmark was also supposed to be a country next door between it and Mexico. And they were going to share the costs for adding Illuminations audio and lighting. but when Denmark decided to pull out, I guess Norway didn't want the expense all by themselves. BUt now with all the wireless technology, it probably could be added to the show a lot easier.

Crashnet,

I was told when asked in Traditions that both Morocco and Norway didn't praticipate in IllumiNations due to religious reasons. Norway specifically because the front is modeled after a Stave church.

Now whether that's true I guess, who knows.

But that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Cheers!
