Why does the "WORLD" not contain ALL characters?

Cars is extremely hot right now and is why it's in the parks and probably will only get a greater presence at WDW over the next few years. And the first Monsters movie is very popular as well. You said you've never seen these movies? Try them out maybe you'll like them more than you think :)

Actually no. I caught a part of ...I don't know, one of the half dozen Cars movies out right now, and the scene was very violent. A car was being chased and had to drive off into the ocean to escape the other vehicles and they all went after it SHOOTING. I know there is some level of violence in all Disney films but an actual shooting chase draws the line for me. I also caught a few scenes from Monsters, which were funny or cute but nothing denoting park attraction worthiness in my opinion. These movies are not Classics material imo.
I also don't care to keep up with the sequels. When did Walt ever put out a sequel on a Classic? It's obnoxious and it's only to stretch the popularity of park attraction investments. Snow White, for example, THE first princess does not have a sequel and is hardly cared for; they reintroduced her attraction as a roller coaster, I'm surprised there is anything to do with her story. I don't like coasters at all, so it no longer counts as an attraction for me.

Judging all Car's movies from one scene isn't the best idea, I only saw the first cars movie and there is no violence in it... I won't pretend to judge any other Car movie or "Planes"(a movie like Cars but it is about planes) based off this experience.

Also comparing what was done in the 1950's to what is done today when it comes to Pop Culture isn't realistic either, I agree many sequels are over the top and ridiculous and I don't see them either. I'm not saying your initial post doesn't have merit that it would be nice to have the availability of rare character merchandise but it's not realistic, where is the line? As others have said WDC owns the rights to over 200 franchises. A lot of those are extremely hot right now and Disney is going to make merchandise for them, don't forget Walt Disney was first selling merchandise out of his (or his brother's I can't remember) garage for the what was then THE hot character. Disney has always had the "Vault" for it's movies which the sole purpose was to create demand for old movies down the road which is exactly how they use it now. The point of this is Disney has always been about getting the most out of the hot franchise at the time while still maintaining a focus on family which I think they are still doing, the sad thing is what they consider hot these days doesn't necessarily mesh with what was hot 20-50 years ago...

On my very first trip I was an impressionable 14yr old. I got to meet some of my favorite Disney Classics characters (such as those from Robin Hood) and buy some of my favorite Disney character merchandise (such as Roger Rabbit).
On consecutive trips it did not make it past me that I was in Disney "WORLD" and yet so many of the Disney characters were seemingly forgotten completely! There was no Roger Rabbit or Robin Hood or Sword in the Stone item to be found!!! NONE! Where can you find all of Disney's characters if not in their "World?"
Rather displeasing actually.

Well...there's a reason Roger Rabbit has disappeared in the World. He's only half-owned by Disney....and half-owned by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment. And when Eisner and Spielberg's relationship went south, Spielberg took his half of Roger with him.

Disney was also going to have a Saturday morning cartoon featuring Roger Rabbit and Eddie Valiant as Hollywood detectives when Spielberg bugged out....and that is how we got this jerk:

Heres a thought, why not haveva screen printing shop there that will put together any characters etc you want. That they can do.
I remember something like this at DTD years ago. Selection of Tshirts to make...I never did it though. Also the Art of Disney has many characters(not ALL, but more then the Princesses and commons) that can be selected for the artists to draw a print for you.

Timing is key...I am sure glad my family started going when we did... we have seen many of the rare characters over the years. Most were from when WDW actually cared about guests' enjoyment at the parks and before the company was ruined by Corporate greed.

On another note. They have made room for a Winnie the Pooh attraction in MK, yet they never play Winnie the Pooh on any of the Disney channels. My son will be 2 and I look to take him through this attraction but he won't know who they are!

Well yeah it is annoying that a classic like Pooh isn't shown on Disney any more but it really is up to you to buy the books, DVDs, toys and what not which can be found everywhere if you want to introduce him to those characters, this goes for all the other Disney characters. Don't rely solely on the Disney channels which, kinda suck these days anyway to showcase everyone as that won't happen sadly.

Being a 'collector' myself, I have every Disney animated classic, Pixar, live action classics and select tv shows on VHS, DVD and blu ray and a ton of the original source material books and Disney version books and merchandise for each film so my kids (when they come along) will not have this problem, though they will probably be sick of Disney very quickly with all the stuff I have amassed..

A lot of the classics sequals are straight to video. Or they retread them with live versions as they are doing now.

I agree with the OP. Go to any store at WDW and ask for Condorman bed sheets and they will look at you like you are a very weird and sad person.

Yes, I was wondering if can show me where you have the "Apple Dumpling Gang" or "The S-h-a-g-g-y DA" or "The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes" plush toys section? Thanks.

Film characters, generally. If you're looking for animated series, you're fighting an uphill battle that you'll likely lose.

Me: "Do you draw any of the Gargoyles characters?"
Artist: "Do you mean the ones from Hunchback?"
Me: "No, the animated series."
Artist: "... That was Disney?"
Me: "... You know what, never mind."

Yes, and it was planned and constructed when Eisner and Spielberg were still on speaking terms....and before the double-whammy of Frank Wells' death and Eisner firing Katzenberg.

Katzenberg then allied himself with Spielberg and David Geffen to create Dreamworks SKG.

And now Disney's Touchstone Pictures is the domestic distributor for DreamWorks films. Funny how things come around.

ROI=return on investment

Sometimes people forget, that above all, Disney is a business. And a very conservatively run one (yes, they've gotten better - but the 80's hypercapitalist mentality still exists there).

There simply are not enough people willing to don a heavy fur suit in the summer heat to fill every costume they have in inventory at what Disney is willing/able to pay.

Bingo. I sure as hell wouldn't go into costume again.

Disney puts out the characters the majority of guests want to see. They do trot out the rare characters on occasion, usually hard ticketed events.

Also, in rare instances when they are missing CM's of one height range, but have an excess of another. Hence, why once when there were no Chipmunks, Gepetto and Stromboli went out. That was odd.

I thought the suits were air conditioned.

They are not air conditioned in any way. @mkt

Exactly. You just suck it up and deal with it. And if you're lucky, you make it all summer without getting sick.

Merchandise follows the similar ROI reasons. Disney can not just order 50 Roger Rabbit dolls.

Well, they can. Then they sell it as a limited edition, and charge through the nose for it to people who populate WDW Fansites.

If they order 10,000 of them and only sell 2000 they will loose money.

Their markups are well padded enough that even in that scenario, they'd still make something or break even.

They stock what they feel will sell and sell well.

This. And if it doesn't sell well, CM's buy it at a discount backstage.[/QUOTE]
