Why does Disney no longer PLUS attractions?

As the title reads, I remember going to the parks as a kid, and Disney used to PLUS current attractions—for example, they plussed the Haunted Mansion by adding the “feet step” projections walking on the stairs and adding the digital projections of the hitchhiking ghosts at the end. They also plussed Tower of Terror by adding random drop sequences.

I feel like they don’t do that as much anymore. Sure, we got the hatbox ghost, but not much more other than that.

I think it would go A LONG way to plus each attraction every so often. Add something new, or update the technology. That keeps the attraction fresh and new, even tho it might be old.

They “plus” attractions quite a bit still! I think the most obvious answer is Star Tours (with its new scenes they add), but there’s other examples as well. Explosions on the Jungle Cruise, as well as the whole rework, is another example. I’m sure other members can add many examples of Disney plussing attractions within the last decade too.

They still do. It's sporadic but they definitely still do. More recently shows have been plussed (Fantasmic 2.0 which is a BIG upgrade over the original, HEA having main street USA projections, Fantasy in the Sky getting laser updates, etc.)

IMHO, YES, they still “plus” the attractions, but our idea of what plus is and what the current imagineers in 2024 think plus is are on two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LEVELS. Unfortunately, what TWDC gives us now will have to suffice…(although I will say, I DO like the light show on SE @ Epcot).

Muppet*Vision 3D got plussed with new projection effects.
Mission Space got a new mission to allow more riders to experience a less intense version
Millennium Falcon is getting plussed in a year
HEA got plussed with projection effects.
Impressions got the 4K upgrade a few years back.
Hat Box Ghost
Fantasmic got plussed with it debuted

While they aren't upgrading attractions as frequently as they should, they definitely continue to do so.

If adding a Food Rocks reference to Carousel of Progress isnt a "plus," then I dont know what is.

One could argue the new CBJ show is a "plus." Or the new segments in Fantasmic. Or whatever they are planning on doing with Voyage of the Little Mermaid. Or hokiday overlays like Jingle Cruise. Or Coco being added to Philharmagic. Or the indian scene being updated in Peter Pans Flight. Even areas are "plussed" sometiems like Ichabod Crane's window, or the new thematic paths in Adventureland. Perhaps eveb something as simple as new lighting in Living with the Land is a "plus." Or adding a muppets theme to the Regal Eagle. Or maybe an additional experience added onto the theme of an attraction, such as Space 220.

You just gotta know where to look.

IMHO, we can agree to disagree but that’s OK…
CBJ? No, because that’s an attraction change not an enhancement…
Jingle Cruise? Sort of because YES, it’s a “plus”, but it’s a temporary overlay and that began in 2013, not new…
Indigenous people change in PPF? No, because that was a change to address a perceived “problematic” scene…
New lighting in LWtL? To me, that’s a stretch…
Muppets at Regal Eagle? No, that’s just Bob adding IP to a place at Epcot WS where it really doesn’t belong…
Space 220? No, it’s no different than Sci-Fi or 50’s Prime Time at HWD…it’s a themed restaurant.
Plusses to me? The paint brushes at TSI…the hidden mickeys, the hidden meanings behind numbers on attractions with messages…those to me are plusses. Adding the pick up truck to the queue of Tiana isn’t a plus…
A plus should be an enhancement, that ADDS to the experience of the attraction over and above the quality and theme of said attraction…I guess I just look a little deeper than you because my classic imagineers expectations were/are much higher than what the current crop are able/willing to deliver.

Adding a hidden Mickey or a address number to a mailbox won’t cost 500k unless you shop at a REALLY expensive hardware store…plussing an attraction doesn’t have to cost big bucks…that’s what sets the imagineers of the past apart from the current group.

"A plus should be an enhancement, that ADDS to the experience of the attraction over and above the quality and theme of said attraction" is how I would describe everything I listed.

You must be fun at parties. Go on about your day if you're gonna be so persnickity.

I said we would agree to disagree…you stated your opinion and I stated mine…I’m a LOT of fun at parties…I just have higher standards at Disney than you do…

Even $5 in plussing.

How do you define any type of return?

If you can document just 1 additional entry ticket specifically because of the plus, that is a fantastic and justified return. Short of that, the current management cannot justify the expense.

If I spend $500k on plussing an attraction, what is the return on the $500k?

What is the return on $500k if I put it in as 5% 6-month CD?
