Why are DLR hotels overpriced?

Easy answer: because people will pay for it.

You have your people who want to stay in the hotels because they think it's their only option, those who want the convenience and those who want the full Disney experience - all of these 'features' mean you can raise the price.

Let's be honest, how many people here would want to stay at another hotel if they could afford to stay at one of the Disney hotels?

There's several reasons why the three different Disneyland Resort hotels charge the high prices they do, in no particular order:

Supply and Demand
American Free Enterprise System
Market Economics

and my personal favorite,

Because They Can

In short, they charge what the market will bear for the rooms they have to offer. People have historically paid those rates in ever increasing numbers, and so those are the rates they charge in order to provide the highest profit margin for the private company that owns them.

If you are looking for something cheaper, you might try the Fairfield Inn on Harbor Blvd. across from the Disneyland main entrance, or the Howard Johnson Anaheim a block further north. Both of those hotels offer decent accomodations within a 10 minute walk of the Disneyland and DCA main entrances for much cheaper rates than the Disneyland hotels. Mimi's Cafe nearby is a great place for breakfast or dinner too.

They are overpriced, yes. But the rates very A LOT depending on the season.
I'm looking at going March 10-13, and the Disneyland Hotel is $176 a night, versus $100 a night at the Hojo or Tropicana. For $76 difference a night its worth it to me.
Now, if you book even a week later, the Disneyland Hotel is suddenly $270 a night. The Hojo and Tropicana are still $100 a night. $170 a night difference; not worth it to me.
Its all down to what you feel comfortable paying anyway. I don't think its overpriced. The security (real or perceived) of not having to leave Disney grounds and having my car parked in a Disney parking lot gives me peace of mind. To others there's no difference. Neither opinion is more valid than the other.
I wouldn't even include the Grand Californian with the other two in this discussion. Its a much nicer, much newer hotel than the other two.
And if you want overpriced, look how much the Grand Floridian is for a night March 10th. Garden View room (I believe the cheapest room) is $529. Wowzers!

The Grand Californian is worth it...By Far one of the COOLEST places I have ever stayed at. And it was so cool to walk out of the hotel and be in Downtown Disney. And like 100 yards away from the MAIN GATE. It was so nice. Definetly decided that when I return to Disneyland it will be the GCH for me.

We stayed one night at the Disneyland Hotel for well over $200, in January, and 3 nights after that at the Howard Johnsons to save money. We had never been to DL and wanted that one night at the DH so we could say we did it. On the morning we checked out we had a paper under our door that said we could stay additional nights for $130. Of course then it was too late to cancel the HJ and get our money back. This really irritated me because I would have loved to have stayed the rest of the trip at the DH and if we could have gotten rates even at $170-190 a night for our whole trip, we would have stayed there the whole time anyway.
