It's amazing that after getting back from a 10 day Disney vacation that I'm always so scared to step on the scale and see how much I've packed on weight wise.seems like all I do is eat while there and all the things I try to stay away from at home lately. BUT lo and behold I always return actually LOSING weight!!! One thing we do more than eat is WALK!!!! And walk And walk And walk...... Love it

I have found the same to be true. Take a mid-day run around the campground and you can eat even more! LOL Every time I leave I swear I'm never eating again. :p

I pretty much look just as forward to pigging out at DIsney as I do the trip itself. I keep a journal of each trip, and writing about the food (as well as everything else that occurred in the day) is a favorite late night activity back at the hotel room.

Totally agree!! We eat wayy more than at home and foods we try to not eat often. We are eating a lot everyday and all the bad foods every day but with all the walking etc we usually stay the same weight wise. The most I gained while there was probably 2 lbs. I gain weight very easily at home due to a slow metabolism etc and at Disney the walking usually outweighs the food we eat and eat a lot of! Lol. We go for 10+ days so that's a lot of walking!! My feet kill me even with the most comfortable shoes but it's worth it because I can enjoy all the foods I can't really eat often at home! Love Disney Food!!! :)

We have friends who tracked how much they walked on their last vacation with a FitBit, and it ended up being about 10 miles a day. From what I have read other places, that is pretty average for a Disney trip. So I feel free to eat whatever I want when I'm there!

Yep I use a Fitbit and that is about right for a day in the parks if not 15 miles! Lol So my normal very slow metabolism is not a concern while there and eating what I want! :)

Just to put another spin on this, a 188 pound person is only burning 107 calories per mile walked. Even if these tales of 10+ miles are true and not overinflated by your trackers thinking you are walking while on a ride, we're only talking about 1000+ calories.

Between pizza and pasta and pasteries and cheese soup and chicken fingers and Mickey waffles and hot dogs and frozen lemonade and fried everything and dole whips and turkey legs and fudge and popcorn and buffets as far as the eye can see and soda pop and booze both flowing like the River Jordan, that thousand calories burned by walking will be making a very quick and easy return.

Your body naturally at rest burns/needs calories all day to run, and the walking/exercise is in addition to those such calories. Goes by your weight and height. My body naturally burns almost 1900 calories every 24 hours at rest to function, so if I burn the example of 1000 calories from the walking/exercise each day I can consume right at 3000 calories for each day while at Disney without gaining any weight.
And it would take 3000 calories over that said 3000 I'm burning to gain 1 pound. It takes an excess of 3000 extra calories added to your diet to gain 1 pound in a day or over a certain time period like a week.
I know my facts from doing research and talking to specialist in this field. I also do not ride many rides that would add much to the tracker and can easily do over those 10 miles a day etc. So yes your info is correct but your forgetting about adding the calories each individual persons body burns naturally to get through a day even if sitting all day by their height and weight. A nutritionist can explain this. :)

Unfortunately, I am of the group that has to wear her more fitted clothes at the beginning of the trip. I gain 5-7 pounds every time. Our trips are usually 7-8 days. I skip breakfast, split an early counter service lunch and have a table service dinner with dessert and coffee. I usually have one extra snack somewhere during the week. It is generally something mickey shaped. No pop, no alcohol. I just don't get it. Everyone I travel with seems to loose weight.

That's where I got my info from was a very reputable and knowledgable sports nutritionist. Lol I know technically it can be more complicated but that was a simpler version of it. :)
All I know is like mentioned I have an extremely slow metabolism at home and struggle daily but at Disney even for almost 2 weeks I usually don't gain and eat anything and everything I want, and if I do gain it's very little thankfully. Shoot at home I look at food and gain weight but with the excessive walking at Disney luckily most times it keeps that at bay! :)

I feel your pain! With me though I gain easily at home very easily! At Disney I do not much , but shoot sometimes the weeks following my trip at home I gain my weight that I didn't at Disney and not even eating NEARLY as much!! Lol

I walk every day at home to keep weight off and have a pretty healthy diet which goes completely off the rails when in WDW, I always put on weight!

I don't necessarily gain weight but I feel like a big blob when I get home. I spend at least a week "detoxing" on healthy foods to feel like myself again. But at home I generally watch how much junk I eat so when I go on vacation I like to enjoy the things I normally don't eat!
 
I have been on Atkins for the last 3 months and lost over 40 pounds and our trip to Disney is in less than 2 weeks. My anxiety level about gaining weight is really high and the way low carb dieting works when you have an influx of carbs all of the sudden your body tends to gain a ton of water weight so there is no question walking is not going to help me. I have allowed myself to be prepared for 10 pds. Yes some of that is water and just from the nature of the diet being diuretic some of that will fall back off easily but still I know I am going to have to work hard when I get home to undo the damage. That being said I don't plan to skip dessert and we actually made reservations at Beaches and Cream to try the famous Kitchen Sink dessert. We have the dining plan so most of the meals are family style or buffet and very high carb food options are what we will be eating. Thinking of Fit bits I'm wondering how those of you that wore them protected them? If you road water rides like splash mountain or Kali River Rapids how did you stop your fit bit from getting wet? Also I want to add I ride in my car with my fit bit on and it doesn't mistake those miles for steps. That's not how it works. So to the person who suggested that it was somehow the case, I just wanted them to know fit bits are moderately accurate and usually they under calculate your steps when they are inaccurate. I have a fitbit charge and would love to see how many calories I'm burning while at disney but I don't want this expensive item to get damaged either.
