Which hotel & when's the best time to get offers?

We'd need a room for 2 adults & 2 children, want to go toward the end of October & and are on a budget - do you all only book Disney hotels here?

Ideally we would go for a Disney resort (preferably one with the monorail!) however this is not within our budget. Any suggestions - I don't know if there is such a thing as a quieter hotel but this might be preferable.
Also one that involves less walking - I know we'll be doing a lot around the parks & don't want to start the day with a huge hike due to illness etc.

Thanks for any advice!

Anyone had a really good experience anywhere in particular

if you want quiet, I've heard to avoid POP Century (PC).

Caribbean Beach (CBR) is a very good moderate, but you need to make sure you get a room near Port Royale (the central dining and shopping area)or you will be walking a ton to meals and the pool. great theming and pools, a very good food court.

I've heard that most of the value resorts require a lot of walking,m but that's just something I've heard. I'm sure someone else here has first hand knowledge

To answer your first question, No everyone doesn't book on-site hotels.

There are many nicer accommodations off-site for less money. Rooms are larger and better accommodations overall. The big advantage the on-site resorts have to off-site resorts is the Disney transportation. The off-site do have shuttles, but the times they operate on are more limited than the on-site buses. If you have your own car, then you would have to pay for daily parking at the parks, whereas on-site you wouldn't(it comes included in your stay if you choose to drive). Make sure to check on any resort fees off-site as well.

I have stayed at POP in June and didn't really have any problems with noise. We made sure our room faced the lake and not the pool. Yes, the food court was crowded, but any of the values will be crowded. I haven't stayed moderate yet, so I can't say anything about those.

We've stayed at POP, AOA, & CBR. The 1st two are values & the last is a moderate. At POP we pay for a preferred room so, that we're close to the main building, bus stop, etc. At AOA the standard rooms are a bit of a walk but, manageable. At CBR we requested to be as close to the food court as possible. We were pretty close to the bus stop, food court, pool, etc. You can deals pretty much throughout the year it just depends on what you're looking for. They offer room discounts, free dining, etc. You just have to keep your eyes open & if you have a Disney credit card they put the offers out to the cardholders a few days earlier than the general public.

Noise levels at any hotel will fluctuate based on the guests. If you hit a deluxe resort thats full of conventioneers letting off steam at the end of the day, it can be just as rowdy as a team of youth football players at a value. You can end up with a walk just as far at a deluxe (far end of AKL or far end Garden suite at Contemporary) as you would at a value. It comes down to picking your resort and getting what you pay for. You don't want a long walk? You may want to look into paying more for a "preferred" room, but it's no guarantee.

On property or off, totally up to you. Staying on property lets you remain in the WDW bubble, but staying off property is usually cheaper. On lets you not have to worry about things like driving and parking, off may get you home slower if you take the services offered by the resort, or quicker if you drive. Etc, etc, etc. I'd suggest getting a copy of the Unofficial Guide and looking through the hotel breakdowns in there.

If a million people replied to your thread, you'll get a million different answers, across the spectrum from "only stay on Disney property" to "never" and all the tricks of the trade to get a discount. By all means, read each and every one of them, but if you need to pick a hotel, I'd say read the descriptions of each resort at
http://allears.net/acc/faq_hot.htm

You'll also find reader reviews there as well.

I know that over the past few years, there have been some decent discounts available in September and October. Anything to entice people to take their kids out of school, you know? The mousesavers website is a great place to stay up to date on current offers and they're usually amongst the first to break news on new deals. Sometimes the deals involve a discount on the package, or a discount on the room, or free dining. They usually don't combine, so you likely won't be able to get a room discount AND free dining.

If you wanted to stay onsite with a bigger room at a better price, some people who are members of the Disney Vacation Club (disney's version of a timeshare) will rent out their memberships during years that they can't go, and sometimes you can get incredibly deep discounts as a result. It won't be a discount you'll be able to combine with an official offer from Disney, like free dining, but often the discount is even better. dvcrentalstore and dvcrequest are two sites many people here have used with no problem, and because they're a third party you may pay a little more than finding a Disney Vacation Club member yourself and trying to negotiate the transaction, they do almost all the legwork for you and assume pretty much all of the risk so you don't take a chance on someone sketchy on ebay going "Yeahhhhh, surrrre, I'll get you a nice room with a Magic Kingdom view, just send a money order to this PO Box, and you're not a cop, are ya? Ya gotta tell me if you're a cop!" These sites are legitimate, well-reviewed, totally on the up-and-up.

Finally, there are a few hotels on site that nonetheless aren't run or maintained by Disney, but are still close to the parks, they have their own shuttle buses and can save you a ton of dough. And two of them, The Swan and the Dolphin, actually DO get access to Disney transportation. OK, technically EVERY person who enters WDW property can use any mode of transportation, but the Swan and the Dolphin have Disney buses come to the hotels themselves. They are also within walking distance (and have boat access) to both Disney Hollywood Studios and Epcot's "back door" the International Gateway, which will let you enter near the back of the park versus the front where Epcot's parking lot is. They are also within walking distance of three Disney Deluxe resort - Boardwalk, Yacht Club and Beach Club - in case you'd like to visit them, dine in their restaurants, walk the Boardwalk etc. Both Swan and Dolphin are considerably cheaper than the Deluxe resorts they're near, and they often have great discounts for people who are either in the military or educators or nurses. The Dolphin is run by Sheraton and the Swan is run by Westin, both run by Starwood, so if you're a Starwood member there are discounts as well. Warning - there is a $20 per day "hidden fee" for people staying at the Swan or Dolphin, plus a charge to park, but the savings compared to a Disney resort should more than make up for it.

Good luck, happy hunting

Around the time you're going, you still might be able to get a Deluxe for cheaper... Cheaper, not as cheap as it could be. I recommend using a deals website such as mousesavers.com. Also, never, NEVER book your stay online. If you call o the phone, and ask about deals, you're likely to get a cheaper room (sometime when you don't even ask for a discount the prices are cheaper).

Another option could be getting a deal on a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) room. It seems expensive, I know, but if you use websites such as dvcreservations.com, you might find a good deal (even though it's not on the Monorail route, I recommend Animal Kingdom, Kidani Village or Jambo House). Though since you're going in late October, that might not be your best bet. It's always important to consider the options though.

Though if even with that Deluxe is still not in your horizons, I'd recommend staying at a value resort. Most likely, I'd say Art of Animation (AoA). The kids will love the atmosphere, and the food court and pool are lovely. The cheapest tooms at AoA will be the little Mermaid Standard Rooms. I would recommend a Moderate resort to you, especially Port Orleans, however, all the Moderates consist of a lot of walking.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
