Which Format? 24P? 30P?

Hi all,

I currently have a Sony HDC camcorder that records to tape. Love the camera but the hardware is slowly dying after a few years of (ab)use. :)

So I've been looking at upgrading to a new camera and making the jump to digital media. I've kinda settled on the Canon Vixia HF M50. Decent all around camera that fits my budget.

Now, one of the things the M50 offers is recording in 24P for that 24fps cinematic look. And honestly that's about the bulk of what I know with of 24p on these camcorders. Coming from filming on tape I've never had to deal with picking a format to film in.

So I'm curious to hear if anyone has done vacation filming in 24p. Did you like the results? how did it compare to the regular 30p/60p format. Or just any other information/tips/etc... about picking which format to go with for a vacation video.

Once I get the camera I'll do some testing but would like to if others had experience with it.

I've had this HD camcorder for a few years but I feel like a totally newb coming into the digital media stuff now, heh.

Thanks!

The big issue with frame rates is if they are compatible with your editing software and display method. Until fairly recently, a lot of editing software did not do well with 24, and in some cases would not work with it at all. There are then also playback issues, where some devices display jitter instead of smooth motion - particularly on horizontal pans.

I found the 24 mode on Canon camcorders to do better in low light than in the 30 mode, but it did generate some jitter when viewed on computers, no issues when viewed on TVs.

I ended up ordering a Canon Vixia M52. Canon's new camera's are nice but not due to release until after our next vacation. Bummer. I was gonna get the M50 but Amazon had the M52 on sale for the same price. Mainly bumps the internal memory from 8GB to 32GB and adds wifi. Picked up a 32GB SD card as well. Think I got my storage needs covered, heh.

Can't wait to get it and start playing.
