Where to stay?

Hi all!! This site seems great. I have lots of browsing to do but I'm wondering if you would share your favorite places and why?

We are a family of 6 - which limits places. We have 4 kids 8, 7, 4 and 1 and time of travel in September/October.

I wasn't overly impressed with the value resorts (well the pics I saw) Are they nice? Would you recommend them? We really wanted the Carribean, which requires two rooms. So that led me into looking at the Grand Floridian. Pricey but nice and on the monorail system...

I went inbetween and was looking at Port Orleans too. Thoughts?

The only turn off there was they seemed a bit smallish and the bed folding on to the table. But really, how much time would we be spending in a room?

The beach resort looks nice too - but unless we take a villa, I think we are too large to go there too?

Yes except for a suite or villa your family is too large!

How are you getting to Disney?

With 6 people it's very hard to a find room big enough. I guessing there is one in a crib so one of the monorail resorts with 2 queen size beds the fold down couch and afore mentioned crib could work. Otherwise how about a cabin at Fort Wilderness or you would have to look into renting a DVC suite. There are several locations but IMHO Wilderness Lodge, or Bay lake tower, if available, are nice.

There is just SO much to look at!! Oy I just get nervous about weather in Sep/Oct so I want to be ok if we are stuck with some rain in a hotel....

I wouldn't worry about rain Disney has so much to do indoors at all the parks you'll still have a great time!

Likely flying. Live in NY so I don't know if they'd make the drive. Where is Bay Lake towers? And what is DVC? Sorry - so new to this!! I will look at the cabins. I tend to avoid wilderness But I should look...

Disney vacation club they rent villas! The cabins are rustic looking but not primative by any means!

Ohh neat!!! but would would we then need to rent a car? (sorry...I've only ever planned all inclusive trips to other countries haha....no thinking/planning there really!!!)

I would strongly recommend looking into renting points and staying in a 1 bedroom villa at one of the DVC Resorts.

what do you mean, renting points? Villas - like the beach club villas? I *think* we were too many for the one bedroom?

Bay Lake towers is right next to the Contemporary, and is walking distance to the Magic Kingdom. I would recommend going to a bookstore and looking at purchasing the Unofficail Guide to Walt Disney World it is IMHO the best guide book. You can also order a vacation planning DVD which will give you a brief rundown of the resorts.

What he said and there are companies that rent Disney villas for people that aren't using their Disney vacation club points that year (it's like a time share)

I forgot to mention you should be planning where to eat now as you can book you dining reservations 180 days in advance and certain restaurants fill up at 7am on the first day of availability!
