Where Photo and Video Is/Is Not Allowed

I was just there like three weeks ago and on the Great Movie Ride, they only said no external video lighting. I took that to mean that you can video the ride without lighting even though I thought I remembered that you couldn't tape at all in there. Did that recently change?

Also, you can't video tape at all in The American Adventure (I wanted to and had the camera all ready but the cast member anounced that it wasn't allowed and I put the camera away).

Some rides they say no to because they think you may drop it. On Dinosaur, I just wanted to hold my tigger backpack so tigger could be in the picture and the cast member wouldn't even let me do that. I would imagine that if you had a camera in your hand they probably would make you put it away too.

that is the only thing I have ever heard as far as video taping on GMR --no external lighting. We didn't turn any external lights on and we kept the screen thing shut but we did get the whole ride on tape. The CM encouraged us to video tape but without all the lighting and open screens. The CM never said no video taping, just no external lights

Flash photography is not allowed on any WDW ride.

Videotaping is a major no-no on BTMRR, RnRc and ToT. (Probably because its very difficult to hold the camera in those environments)

I've seen people tape and take pictures on lots of the rides, the ir and other video lighting can throw off the ride equipment, I have been on the Great Movie Ride a number of times that the cm's encouraged filming and some even said now make sure you get my good side in the close ups, especially the cm's on the Jungle Cruise. I have seen some people that tried to tape in space mountain and they were told to put your camera away and I'm sure that more of a safety issue that anything else, who would want a camcorder flying back in their face becasue someone let go of it. Only time other than that was in the attractions where there was copyrighted material like Muppets 3D and that stupid movie in Norway.

Ah yes, the movie in Norway with the fashion models at one point wearing their oh-so-now 80s fashions... :lookaroun

Actually, I sat and watched that last trip and talked to a CM about it afterwards. We both had a good laugh at how dated the film is.

Viewscreens

My wife got shouted down by a disembodied CM voice while videotaping Pirates of the Caribbean because the LCD viewscreen was open. I suppose their IR cameras picked that up as "video lighting", although if they had really been in the boat they probably wouldn't have thought it was.

I agree with the earlier poster...it seemed wrong that the viewscreen got her a scolding when there were people taking flash pictures in the boat in front of us.

thanks saltmom1! you have a great trip too! I'll be sure to post a trip report when I get back. If I wasn't going to college 5 days after I get back, I'd hide in your suitcase!

Maybe sometimes it depends on the cast member? I have videos from BTMRR and Pirates. No one said anything on either. On Pirates the LCD was on as well as the night vision feature (not the external lighting). On BTMRR we weren't the only ones videoing. There was some guy in front of us who had a large camera (the old kind that took full sized videotapes). I was planning on filming ToT on my next trip, I would have done it on this one but it stormed on the day I was at the studios and I didn't want to take the camera out in the rain so I left it in the car. I also have Haunted Mansion on video, which we also used the night vision feature on.

If you have a new Sony camcorder, they have the NightShot Plus which allows you to shoot in extremely low light and still get great video without external lighting. I love using that because the quality of film is excellent. My PotC film looks like you're actually in the boat the whole time and not watching a video.
Mine's a Sony, but it's a few years old... so the night shot is a green video that's not all that good quality. :-(

That's how my night shot is too. I usually try not to use it unless I have to in order to get the video (like really dark rides like HM and POTC)

I have this quesition for experienced filmers and photographers on disney rides, or anyone who can just help me.

Next time I go back to WDW, I want to film the Universe of Energy. Yes I know they don;t allow filming, but with ExxonMobile gone, and the show almost 10 years old, I have to wonder....

I mean I CAN get away with filming the outside of the pavilion, the walk in, the preshow, and that's it. My question is HOW CAN I GET AWAY WITH IT?

I see other ride videos of the Universe of Energy. Now there are 6 theater vehciles. They sit 3 across with two in a row. Should I sit in the middle row in the back car and backmost seat in the middle of the backseat? See I figure if I sit in the front people will see me filming, and if I'm in the back and can easily raise my cam corder over people's heads to film, especially the dinoarama. I would of course film for personal use, but I know I will have friends that havent been to WDW in ages and would like to see a video of UoE if I could do one for them. Does anyone think I am right doing this?

Also I never film with a birght or external light. I can film with night vision without the infared light. It is still green and birght, but not as bright with the light. I also have back lighting which I used on SSE. It came out very well. No need for night vision, and the color and contrast came out very well, and not too dark. I would use this filming technique for the UoE.

Also flash photography on the UoE. Yes I know its a big "no no", but of all the ride vidoes I've seen, and I rides i've taken on the UoE, there is always a group of people taking some flash pics of the dinorama. Now it doesn't bother me. Just a few quick pics, and that's it. Does anyone else do this? I mean I would only take two pics in flash. The brontasoarous and T-rex (sorry about the bad spelling?), and these people never get caught when I've experienced the UoE.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :sohappy:

I would think that you'd be able to get away with videotaping the ride as long as there's no external lighting. It's dark and there's a good chance no one would see you. I would probably go for some type of middle seat just because if there's any cast members in the back of the room, they may see it (don't know if any stand back there, but it's possible).

I would not recommend the flash pictures just because even if you don't get caught by a cast member, it may distract other guests around you. I mean no offense by this, but it really bothers me as another guest when someone else takes a flash picture. To me, it takes away from the show and is very distracting when there's flashes all around you. When I go it always seems like once one person takes a flash picture, others decide to do it to. They seem to think "Well that person did it and got away with it I can to" Then it becomes a distraction for others with multiple flashes everywhere.
