Arthur's Epic Nature & Wildlife Adventurepalooza Trip Report
Part IV
Welcome to yet more Everglades goodness! In this fourth installment from this month's quest for nature & fun, Dad and I embark on another short trail known as the
Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook Trail. Unlike the previous Anhinga Trail which we explored earlier that winds through the land, this one winds over the land, giving excellent views of the "river of grass".
As you may remember from my last installment, the Anhinga Trail gave us a magnificent encounter with 3 very large alligators up close. On the Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook trail, however, we encountered a more seasonal inhabitant of the Everglades. Not nearly as photogenic as the alligators, but certainly more of them. What is this creature I speak of? Why, the mosquito, of course!
Dad (seen above showing off his) & I had no choice but to take advantage of the mosquito jackets we purchased prior to the trip. We looked & felt foolish at first...until we passed a Russian group of hikers (the only other hikers we saw on this trail) who were all sporting the same fashionable apparels of mosquito netting. The jackets were lightweight, and they did the job! Not one of us got bitten despite the bombardment of unwanted flying wildlife. (Well, between using the jackets, and a lot of Cutter brand deep-woods bug spray. It was a team effort of products that worked successfully).
Despite the 'skeeters...we had a lovely hike along this short trail. The views were beautiful to say the least.
The only real wildlife we saw on this trail was one great egret way off in the distance staring back at us. Unfortunately I blurred the picture some. Apparently I haven't mastered the art of photography while in the confines of a mosquito jacket.
The trail was slightly elevated, and led to a larger platform overlooking the grasslands.
About halfway across the boardwalk, we got to this pond where we hear something splashing in the water directly beneath our feet. While we did not see what it was, it sounded way too small to be Bob Saget, though we did not rule that possibility out completely. I'm guessing either a frog, fish, or one of the Olsen twins. (Sorry,
@PUSH for stealing your joke from earlier. Next time, copyright your material).
This was also the trail where we witnessed some magnificent storm clouds building off on the horizon. Just something about seeing distant storms in this environment has a very majestic feel to it. Reminds me of my favorite quote from J.R.R. Tolkien:
“It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
That pretty much wraps up the Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook trail. Simple, short, yet breathtaking. Cannot begin to describe how tranquil the sounds are listening across the open landscape. Another reason why Everglades National Park is one of my favorite places in the world now.
Next up in Part 5. Alligator babies in the wild! Dozens of 'em!
To be continued...
