It must be an Italian origin, but it can't be Catholic because I attended Catholic schools from 1st grade thru 9th and I never heard of it. When I was a kid every Friday was a "no meat" day but I guess fish meat doesn't count, but they dropped that requirement decades ago. Someone finally figured out that the fish thing was probably because at the time that they wrote the rule book most of the followers were fishermen.I don’t know if it’s exclusively a Catholic thing, but for my Italian neighbours, it represent the seven sacraments. As Italians, they eat a lot of seafood regularly, so it’s probably not that big of a stretch to come up with seven different types.
That was one of the reasons why I have certain fish that I just cannot handle. Salmon was a biggy, I have been contemplating trying it again because I haven't had it since I was about 15 years old. My mother used to make Salmon wiggle out of canned salmon. That included vertebrae's and all. I used to gag on them all the time and my brain put up a defense wall against it and haven't eaten any since then. Then my Dad took up fishing the problem was that he hated to put the worms on the hook and had me do it. That was alarm #1, then since he couldn't stand sticking a hook through a worm wanna take a guess who had to gut the fish when we got home and there was #2 reason. The ones I could eat were usually discovered when we went to the coast of Maine and different seafood restaurants therein. I had my first Haddock on a family trip to Prince Edward Island and have been trying to get the same enjoyment out of it ever since. Haven't been able to duplicate it. My guess is it is more how it is prepared/cooked but maybe freshness had a little to do with it.
