Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Just so you folks don't think of me as a total Scrooge, I have a lighted Santa that stands about a foot high that we had when I was a small kid. I still remember it from about age 4 or so. That would make it, at least, 67 years old. (yes, they had electricity back then) I put that out. I also have a small 2.5 foot rotating tree with optic fiber strands (thousands of them) that project multi colors at the very tips that are woven in the tree itself. I usually put that up unless I am feeling highly Ebenezer, but, it was just for the grandkids if they happened to visit.

What do I miss on Christmas Trees you ask? Tinsel, I love Tinsel and it seems that no one uses the stuff anymore. They say it is because of their pets. We always had cats when I was growing up, and they never had any problems with it. Most of them lived to be way older then the "normal" life expectancy for cats. I don't use it now because I don't put up a tree and the tinsel would look pretty silly just laying on the floor.

Just for giggles, I just looked up the cost of a package of tinsel at The Vermont Country Store and it was over $17.00 for one package. That was more then we paid for an entire Christmas Tree. I guess that I know why now!
I love tinsel too. It just wouldn’t go with my tree.

You also had a husband and two boys that individually are taller then most mature trees. I think that they could have come down earlier if you had wanted it too. So no getting out of it... you are responsible for the early and late end of winter. Let me ask you this... do you want to build a snowman? :cold:🥶❄☃
I thought for a minute you were going to tell her to decorate her husband and boys, since you were comparing them to trees.

When I was a kid the lights on the tree were very hot. Angel hair was rumored to have been a massive fire hazard so we never had any of that, but metal based tinsel was not going to burn. BTW, the advantage of those hot lights was to warm the sap in the pine trees and create that magical Christmas tree smell. There are at least two or three generations now that have never really experienced that little perk full force.

I use tinsel. But does this really surprise anyone?

Many still do and if I were to put up a full sized tree, I would as well. But it is no longer common to do so. Tastes and artistic ability have changed all that. None of us are "cool kids" if we use it. A burden I guess we will have to live with until it becomes fashionable again.

Wrong!! You're just not presenting it correctly. It is very much in vogue to embrace "retro" designs. :D (It's all in your choice of words.) ;)

Where I live live trees are the norm and the town won’t collect the tree if there’s any tinsel on it so people don’t bother with the tinsel.

OK, so it has nothing to do with taste or artistic ability... it is trash removal law that changed it. Back "in the day" we disposed of our own trees and didn't worry about that. I wonder what they are worrying about? Non-biodegradable sure, but they can be made degradable. If it is to save the health of the dump picking flying rodents (gulls) then I cannot back it. Sometimes a species needs to have its herd thinned. ;)
