Because nothing says orchestra like parasailing...?
:hilarious:

The conductor of the orchestra was a travel agent. He would arrange these 5 week tours over the summer and it was relatively inexpensive because he would barter the hotel stays for concerts. I got to go to Southeast Asia one summer and Europe the following summer. Every couple of weeks we would have a relaxation day so we got to do things like parasail, go to Tivoli Gardens amusement park, tour the Singapore zoo, etc. The chaperone ratio was about 1:8 and my parents didn't go so it was pretty awesome for a 15/16 year old!

Oh that sounds great!! When I was a senior in high school, I was invited to participate in the Wyoming Ambassadors of Music program, which took high school musicians to Europe to tour for a few weeks, but it was several thousand dollars to participate and there were no set performances. You would literally show up, ask if they wanted you to perform somewhere, and you would perform that night if they said yes. If they said no, you just hung out and moved on the next day. So there was no guarantee that you'd get to perform. My mom thought it was kind of a gamble to spend the kind of money they were asking, and I kind of think she probably didn't want me going without her as a chaperone and no way could she afford to go. So I didn't get to go. I was so so so upset when she told me she wouldn't let me use my savings to pay for it, and I was desperate to go to Europe and she told me I might have other chances to go to Europe. Little did I know I'd end up living here!

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

How did you end up living there?
