When to go?

I am planning a 2007 trip to DLRP. I have been to both DL and WDW so I'm not a total "newbie" but I'm trying to figure out what the best time for us to go is. I have read many threads here but I still have some questions...

I want to experience as much as possible, so I'd prefer not to go when lots of rides are down for refurb or shows are dark. But, I'd also like to avoid "major" crowds. So how do you define "crowded" at DLRP? Is it like summer or Christmas at DL & WDW (i.e. capacity!) How long are the waits for major rides?

What months are considered "summer" in Europe? How crowded is it in summer?

Do the shows and such still play on weekdays or only on weekends?

Does the Christmas season start in mid November like WDW and DL? When does it end? Is there more added closer to Christmas or is it all the same for the entire season? What are the crowds like?

Weather is not a concern - we're from Northern Canada - but do they continue to run the rides, shows etc. in bad weather (i.e. snow?)

Is there a "compromise" time to go when things are mostly up and running but it's not as crowded?

Thanks for any advice or insight!

Phewwwww, thats a lot of question's.
I don't know all the answer's but i'll have a go.

From my experiance, whilsts there are crowds at peak times they are easily avoided if you play your card's right.
around easter is a good time to go, I am going in 27 days. there are only 3 attractions / shows that are not running, 2 shows and the fireworks. the fireworks (wishes - same music as wishes from Magic Kingdom WDW but more lasers effects and less fireworks)

i found first thing in the morning (9AM till about 12) is quite quiet (max 1hr wait for Space Mountain) it can then start to get bit busy but the attractions like Pirates, haunted mansion (called Phantom Manor) aren't usually too bad. after the afternoon parade rides such as space mountain and indiana jones start to have shorter and shorter wait times, (in the eve i've known Space mountain have just 5 minutes queue.)

There are a lot of locals who use the park so weekends are often more crowded. i've only know it really hit capacity around new year, that's not to say that it doesn't reach copacity occassionally.

the shows run according to the time of the year and regardless of whether or not it is a weekend.

yes the parks put up their christmas decorations around the same times and the US parks. Pretty much the decorations etc for christmas are the same for the season as for christmas day.

Most rides do work regardless of the whether including snow, some such as indiana jones or big thunder mountain often open 30minutes after the park opens to allow them to grease the track or something i was told. but i have riden them in the snow.

like i said at the begining i like easter but its all good really.
enjoy your trip.

I've been in June/July and November and to be honest, I wasn't crazy about either of those times. The summer was certainly busier (which is to be expected) and I think June-Aug will probably be the busier months to visit, obviously based on school holidays. November was A LOT quieter but the weather is not always too good. On one trip there in November, it rained the whole time which I guess is a risk of having a park in Northern Europe compared to Florida, California etc.
Agreeing with it398, around Easter time could be a good option- the weather is improving by then and it's less crowded than summer :)

There are two new rides on the go that should be up and running by mid 2007 in studio's that i know of, these should be on time as they have the best instalation crew booked for the job .. ..TOT and a new ride to the Disney line up, that you just don't want to miss ..

I've been there at many different times of year -- and if you have been to WDW then there are a few comparisons you should be aware of:

It is NEVER as crowded at DRP or DSP as it is at WDW at peak. Their attendance is highly dependent on the European school schedule - and weekends should be avoided year round if possible. Like the US parks, you need to get there at least a half hour before opening. Make sure you have already purchased your tickets and have them in hand (either in Paris when you arrive at various locations, or from Disneylandparis.com mailorder via internet.) The lines are long and unwieldy.

Like MK, they let you into the park about 15 minutes before opening. Head directly to the Space Mountain rope drop area - ride as soon as they open and you will have no line, and most likely no line to re-ride. WIthin a half hour there will be a half hour wait. Then head directly across the park to Frontierland and ride Big Thunder Mountain. From that point on you can wander. Two adults, on a schoolday, nonpeak, can do the ENTIRE park by 3 pm. THere are fewer attractions and the actual park is much smaller than the MK.

Add a park hopper option to your ticket and you can head over to Disney Studios afterwards.

By all means - avoid the beginning of school holiday periods, and weekends. You will find a huge difference between crowds at WDW and crowds at DRP. Crowds in WDW, even when at peak, stand patiently (well, not always patiently) but at least stand in line and wait their turn. The crowds at DRP are mostly European-type crowds...that is LINES ARE NOT EXISTANT until you actually get into a single file queu line near the loading docks - people push, work their way past you, cut in front, and sometimes ignore lines altogether. Lines in France are merely an inconvenience, and the "priveleged" will push ahead of you no matter what. I don't mean this to be derogatory, since I lived in Paris for many years, but there literally is NO concept of a single file line in which you wait your turn.

This will also apply to counter service restaurants, the entrance queues, bathrooms and everywhere else. There is no other way to minimize this but to avoid peak times ( weekends, and school holidays).

You should also be aware that while American's at WDW will head in all directions at MK, EUropeans will primarily start in Frontiertown and work their way around clockwise. That is, except for all the teens and people in the know who head directly to Space Mountain. There is no second big attraction to draw the crowd at opening, so Space Mountain is it.

DRP also has some odd riding patterns -- people actually "Ride" the train -- that is, they treat it as a major attraction and go all the way around in the circle and don't get off at any of the stops. Unlike MK, you can not use the train to make a quicker time-saving trip from, say, Discoveryland to Frontierland. You won't be able to get on the train at all at busy times of day. For some reason, they have no problem waiting an hour at the mainstreet station to ride the train around in the circle.

The Castle area, unlike MK, does not serve as the primary "meeting point" for most people - as we know from MK, most AMericans meet somewhere in front of the castle, or near the Walt statue. At DRP, the meeting places tend to be the restaurants and arcade areas on Main Street. Avoid those.

Do a google search for the school holidays for France, Germany, and Italy. Those will be your primary guidelines. Also - be on the lookout for specials announcements on the disneyland resort paris website -- if they are running a special like "get two free nights at a resort hotel with the purchase of two nights" the parks will be PACKED...those kinds of bargain incentives drive the crowds more than holidays at times.

Ive been there at many different times of year, and have never had a problem if you go midweek and avoid July, August, and the last two weeks in December.

BY the way, the Disney parks interchange their holiday decorations - you will recognize the holiday decorations from previous years at WDW. Last year, they had some original decorations on Main Street, but the previous year, they used Epcot's decorations from the previous year.

my advice - DO NOT GO IN THE SUMMER! / Early September! :(

To start off i had flown with air france - big mistake i was CRAMMED into the aeroplane (im at 6ft 1 ) which was a lousy bae systems aircraft.

I went with my partner (stayed hotel cheyanne) in september 05 and i honestly had an excellent time OUTSIDE of park operation hours - rainforest cafe is to die for

Then when it came to park opening times, i was pushed and shoved constantly by spanish tourists who have the incapability to queue for a ride! when i got onto pirates of the carribian one lady refused to scooch up - *i thought sod it and sat down anyway* :king: and then hurled (in spanish - which im fluent in) various torrents of abuse throughout the ride! - i promptly said to her afterwards that she should be more careful with what she is saying around people - in a more abusive matter. But thats not the point, my trip was spoiled by these numpties and they're over zealous kids!

Queing was a nightmare also with queue jumpers! and i just got fed up and left the park! (went shopping at the local shopping mall)

However - cast members service was most excellent :) and they were all pollite courteous - and a good laugh! - i got lynched by the bears however who where moshing with me (im a metal head) at one stage!

atmosphere was excellent too - shame about the studios being a bit well -crap!

Ahhh nothing like a good narrow minded rant to clear the air! :D
