out of curiosity, where and when exactly does Space Ranger Spin take your picture?

Right after you pass the tunnel and you see Zurg's ship one more time..The guns on the side of his ship is the camera..Hence why your vehichle locks when entering the area..

Yep...and why when you are in front of Zurg's ship you suddenly see a bright strobe-like flash.
