When did Disney start overpromising and under delivering?

I can't defend Iger. But Cheapskate Chapek truly deserves the credit for destroying Disney.
Its mostly Iger. When he left he never totally left. He hung around and "advised/ oversaw" Bob C. and his policies. Bob C. continued dealing with Igers policies that were already in place. Bob C. does deserve some of the fault but he was a fall guy and Iger was the set up man.

Maybe I’ll eat these words but that seems like a brief mistake that they learned from. It seems like they’ve gone back to staying tight lipped and any early hint of what they’re thinking is presented to the public as “blue sky” stuff that is clearly not set yet.

They should definitely take more of the Universal approach and stay quiet, at least on details, until closer to reality.

The microscope of fandom is the problem. And expectations are everything.

While Galaxy’s Edge was being developed, I was not paying any attention to WDW. I knew they were building a Star Wars land, that’s it. After it opened, I heard that it was tough to get on Rise.

I didn’t know or expect any of the extra features the OP mentioned. So, when I eventually visited, I was blown away by what is there. I loved it.

Compare that experience with someone grumbling their way past Millennium Falcon, seeing only what was missing.
had the same experience with Count Down to Extinction. We visited AK shortly after it opened but had not paid any attention to the project really and was blown away by the ride from start to finish. There is something to be said about being surprised.

He approved a plan that was led by some amazing people including John Lasiter.

Red Car Trolley, Buena Vista Street, and Grizzly Peak Airfield are not. The IP crazy came later.
Red Car Trolley, Buena Vista Street, and Grizzly Peak Airfield - - - - I don't really think these "things" reinvigorated the park.
The popularity and attendance came after Pixar pier- Rad Springs, Monsters, ect....IP overload

I'm not as deep a fan as most of you, but I witnessed firsthand the change in the parks from 2012-2022. That decade demonstrated a notable (and I have) shift the the whole park vibe. ...not for the better.

And, fair enough, covid did not help things.

I don't know what CEO was at the reigns in 2010-2012, but that guy is to blame, imho.

Well monsters was approved when Eisner was still around, it opened in 2006.

Midway Mania - 2008
World of Color opened in 2010.
Little Mermaid - 2011

The “rededication” of the park which included Cars Land and Buena Vista Street was in 2012.

Lasseter wasn’t really a leader on the project. He was given a fluff title at Walt Disney Imagineering and used up a lot of political capital keeping on Cars Land.

The franchise mandate came at the very start of Iger’s tenure, in the midst of the successful opening of the Nonsescript Coaster Themed Like India or Whatever. Buena Vista Street is very much a franchise project, it is the commodified Disney history franchise. It’s completely covered in nonsense Disney references.

I think it began after Disneyland Paris struggled, DCA, HS, AK, even Hong Kong were all made on a budget and under delivered.

I loved Iger his first decade, DCA 2.0 was amazing, Pandora is amazing, the Galaxy’s edge story is underwhelming but the land itself is amazing. The problem is he’s fixed some of Eisners budget created problems and added very little else. He’s built a few amazing things but that doesn’t make up for the billions he didnt spend that was absolutely necessary to keep up with attendance growth.

Even the new Lookout Cay is a fraction of what they originally proposed, seems like every piece of concept art they show you can expect 50% to get cut before it’s built.

At Disney World, I feel when they started increasing the price of the Christmas party, then started additional options at the party for even more money
