My understanding is that this is the case for NEW APs. If you are renewing, it becomes active when you purchase the renewal. My pass is expiring March 3rd. If I renew it before then, my renewal date (for next year) will become the date I purchase it THIS year! If I don't renew it before it expires, I'll have to pay the price for a NEW pass, will get a voucher, and it will be activated when I turn it in at the gate. Sound complicated? It is! In the past, we got a voucher when we renewed, then activated on our next trip (as long as it was within a year) so sometimes could make it last for 18 months...NO MORE! Now I have to calculate when I might be going, and decide which option will cost less in the long run. Also, other posters elsewhere have mentioned that they haven't gotten a reminder when their AP was expiring, so missed the renewal period.
