When and why did MK get rid of evening xtra magic hours on Fridays? Are we likely to get the back?

For the past 5 years, since at least the summer of 2008, MK had xtra evening magic hours on Fridays - staying open until 3:00 a.m. This is apparently no more, much to my chagrine as we are going this July. Any insights? Is there any hope of these returning? Have a good one!

EMHs (to me) is the greatest value of staying at a WDW resort. However, this year we saw evening EMHs decreased from 3 hours to 2 hours. And while many argued that the 3rd hour was wasteful especially when the MK would close at 3am - that last hour was absolute peaceful and a time to take in the beauty of the MK nights.

Sunday has been EMH night for the MK for a number of years. I usually visit 4 or 5 different weeks during the year, and haven't experienced them on a Friday at MK. That's usually the Epcot night.

Sadly, if anything, I think they will reduce more or get rid of them in the future :-(

I also loved being in the park when it was so empty and walking right on all the rides

OMG that was the best. It is something about the MK at 2am in the morning that is just amazing. I love the entire park. I am a night person though. I think all the parks glitter at night. I can not stand HS during the day time but at night its amazing.

MK does special events on Fridays and is sometimes opened late...MVMCP, MNSSHP, P&P, etc... I don't think I've ever been to an EMH at MK on Friday.

Now with 3am EMH, they just close the park at 1am with 2hours extra.

The reduction of EMH is part of a long term strategy by WDW management to reduce operating expense. Evening EMH were reduced from 3 to 2 hours in (I believe) February. In addition, the number of nights offering EMH was reduced.

Thanks for the replies. We've gone to Disney in '08, '09, '10, and '11 (skipped '12) and are going this summer. Each of the years we went, we got to WDW on Sat, went to MK on Sunday - open till 3:00 a.m. (Mon morning), and left on the following Sat, after closing down MK at 3:00 a.m. Friday night (Sat morning). Now they only have the EMH's on Sunday. Won't be the same this year without the close-it-down finale. O well...

It's been pretty much Sunday evening and Thursday mornings for awhile. However, exceptions are made in the busier months and holidays...June, July, and December have some days with Friday but it is rare. It may have more to do with the time of year that you were at WDW.

2006 - Sunday evening; Thursday mornings
2007 - Sunday evening; Thursday mornings
2008 - Sunday evening; Thursday mornings
2009 - Sunday evening; Thursday mornings
2010 - Sunday evening; Thursday mornings

Eventually it is in the plans of the WDWR to take out EMH. They just cost to much to run the parks. Starting this year they will start to make them much more scarce. And eventually in one or two years it will be phased out. Progress of Disney has always been eventually "getting rid" of things. Nothing last for ever and EMH has seen its glory days no big deal. Anyways who would stay from 8 a.m to 3 a.m for the parks?
